    Overdrive Cable set up.

These photos are of my overdrive and how I worked the extra cable and handle.
The handle was made from scatch and used a old series rover 4wd knob.
The cable is one I had made using the original high/low transfercase cable as a sample.
The overdrive cable was made 300mm longer which I now know is a bit too long, so I just ran the cable over to the lefthand side of the gearbox with the high/low cable and then back to the overdrive.
The bracket for the cable on top of the transfercase is just a bit of simple alloy angle bolted to the existing inspection cover.
The original range rover overdrive handle which would have come out of the floor of the car is now shorten and has a flaten area at its end to take the cable clevis and yoke.
Two 3/16 holes were drilled to give different leverage ratios.

Mmm, that looks almost identical to one that I had a look at on saturday in a gentlemans 101. interestingly there were 4 101's at corowa. 2 were REMLR members (1 a new one), one a british vehicle (still chasing michaels details) and the other was a prototype (didn't hang around long).

I have been to two swim ins at Corowa the very first one many years ago when it was just a few seep blokes getting together.
The next was the year of the Bren Gun Carrier and wow ! how big it has gotten with many rare vehicles...........but not one 101 landrover.
To have four 101s in one spot for a event not especially for them just shows how big the event is getting every year.
I for one would like to check out some other peoples 101s to get different ideas.
In the three years I have owned my 101 I have not seen another one.
Cooma is impossible for me so I will have to wait longer.
The details for the overdrive bracket I lifted from a Britsh web site and the rest is straight forward.
The use of the overdrive is a bit stiff as it was made to operate with the long handle sticking up though the transmission tunnel and now the cable takes a lot of force from the new lever up in the cabin.
I may have to smooth out the overdrive detent rails if it doesnt free up a bit.
The overdrive is now being used alot now and I have a better idea of how it effects the vehicle.
THe cruise speed is not increased, but the normal 80 to 90 kph is more relaxed with a 500rpm engine speed drop and a lot lower noise levels.
In flat country roads the vehicle will have the long legs which it previous badly lacked.
The vehicle will cruise up to 110 kph with the overdrive, but the slower speed is the sweet spot.
It has well been worth the expense and effort to set up.
I wouldnt want to try any higer gearing thou.
The next project will be very very slowly saving the pennys for a ARB locker for the front diff and then working out the mods required to fit it to the 101s large drive axles.
There seems to be next to no information on this as the people who have done it have kept quiet about it .
    Regards Ron

Michael knows where his 101 came from I believe. It's still in the black and green camo, and very tidy and original as far as I can see. I think I got a pic of it over the weekend.
