Does anyone know the OD of a series three rover rear diff drive axle.
I am interested in the OD of the defender axle.....both salisburys and measured at the splines.
I am starting to get a bit serious about fitting a ARB locker to the front of the 101 .
I need to know this if I am going to purchase a locker and get some machining done.
I cannot find my spare defender rear axles or drive flanges at present.
And how will that ensure you get your truck back :twisted:Quote:

There is some stuff up under the front passenger wheel well but I have never had a look at that. Where the air intake hose comes out of the airfilter it is cut and has a 90 degree bend that takes it down towards the rear about 1'. It then has a 180 bend that brings the air intake back to the already fitted metal pipe that takes air to both carbies. It is on this re-routing of the air intake pipe that the larger disk shaped gizmo that gets the gas into the air intake is fitted. I have a switch on the dash that switches over to lpg and kills the fuel pump and activates a petrol cutoff switch.
The slight downside of my installation is loss of space inside and the gearbox cover is slightly modifed to clear the extra pipework - but all seems to work OK and is simple.

It is good to see that you have finally started work on my new locker:).
Any ideas yet on how to make the locker take 101 axle splines. Older landrovers have 10 splines, later are 24 spline - how many splines are 101 axles? arn't they different again?

Operation Locker My research has told me if I order a series 3 salisbury rear locker I should be able to get the side gears cut to a larger over size to take the 101 axles.
I have checked out a local company which has a spark erosion machine of the right type which can cut the side gears on a ARB locker.
A spark erosion machine must be used as the side gears are hardened.
The diff carrier is the same as a normal salisbury, only the axles are different and alot larger.
What I need to know is the spline OD on both the series 3 and defender drive axles.
As I have the Detroit locker in the rear, I have two spare 101 side gears as a sample for size.
I am trying to find a axle I took out of my Defender........if the Defender axle slips through the centre of the 101 side gear ,there is enough meat for operation locker to go a head.
I heard the series axle is slightly smaller and may be the better option.
Operation Locker I hoping may play out like this.
1 Buy a defender ARB locker for the rear ( if operation locker fails I can always put the locker in the rear of the Defender and not waste my money.)
2 Have the ARB side gears spark erroded for about 150 to 200 dollars each.
3 Pull apart the front brakes and CVs of the 101 so the drive axles can be removed and the diff centre dropped out.
4 Shove the locker in and hope it all works and fits.
5 the switch is already in place with a diff lock symbol as is the air compressor,just got to run a air line and a soleniod valve
6 Find a steep rocky hill and have fun or poo my pants, what ever comes first.
I expect great things as the Detroit Locker in the rear opened up a whole new world off road wise and even heavy towing on slippery surfaces.
The 101 has little spring flex due to the high spring rates and the springs are odd expensive things to play with.
So lifting a wheel is not uncommon.
The front locker should put the thing up there with the best of the custom road going 4bys.
With out any locker the modern coil sprung 4bys witha little bit of lift will leave a 101 behind if the ground is uneven.
And how will that ensure you get your truck back

really good talking to you guys and hearing what you doing to your 101
i just about finished makeing over head consol mounted it in middle of cabin between seats out of 20 ml pipe bolted onto roll bar and front top of windscreen just fitted uhf and stero put speakers on roll bar
will try and post photos soon and see what you think

Give me a month..........I know of two 101s kicking around in storage with owners who have done nothing with them.
One is in perfect ex army auction condition.
I will get to see one soon and report back.
