Thanks but the sender is all OK - it is the little flat resistor that bridges the terminals on the back of the gauge. I will bridge them with a variable resistor to find out what the actual resistance is that makes the gauge works OK and get a normal resistor of the same amount from Jaycar and put it all back together.
