Thread: TD5 Defender Radio Removal

You need two pieces of metal with a bend in the end (I think I've heard them referred to as keys) to slot into each side. They push the cradle apart and grab onto the sides of the unit so it pulls out easily. You should be able to get these from any car stereo place (giveaway) as they come with every new stereo.

Actually after a bit of messing around I found that the holes on each side contain a 2.5mm allen key socket. Just need to turn this about 20 time until the locks on each side of the radio unit disengage.


Now if anyone has a set of colour codes for the factory wiring harness that would be great!

Use a test light.
That's how i did mine.

Earth will be black.
Then there is constant power. Should be pink
And power. Should be red

The rest will be for speakers i think they are grey and black?

Thanks Benny, Did you end up cutting off the factory connector and putting on a DIN connector directly to the factory wiring loom? Apparently you can get adapters from the BMW round style connector that is in there, to the DIN, but I figure no one is ever going to put back an original radio, so no point in keeping the bmw style connector.


Looks like the original radio got wet at one stage, as the main PCB has corroded badly.

All Done.

Was easier than I thought.
Thanks for the suggestion about testing the wires - made it very easy.
The radio I installed was a Pioneer DEH-2100IB, includes an Ipod connector. I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by the sound quality of the factory speakers when driven by a decent head unit.
