Second hand 2003 130 Crew Cabs Good Rigs ?

Considering a 2003 130 Crew Cab in order to save some $$ over new.

Any things I should look out for and was this year a good reliable rig ?

I was consideriong new Puma or Hilux but thinking I want to bea bit more economical and spring for a second hand model.

    Cheers pc3

If your going used, look at a good condition 2002 or earlier. They have the salisbury diffs which are stronger and less problematic than the rover diffs. They changed over during 2002. The salisbury are easy to spot, bigger and with clearly visible (10) bolts on the housing.

Also, 130's have stronger clutches than 110's.

The one I have enquired about is an 03 model so it has the weak diffs by the sounds of it.

Not necessarily weak, just not as strong as the earlier one...

.....seem to have performed satisfactorily for 7 years though

Exactly, if you have already lined up a good 2003 the diffs aren't really a big issue. It's only if its been used hard and if its been used hard then it won't be a good 2003.

Well I have a 2001 130 and it does not have Salisbury diffs. I am pretty sure it has P38 diffs front and rear... but not 100% sure, except definitely not Salisbury in the rear.

Do a search here for cracked chassis on 130s. If they have been overloaded and flogged, this is a possiblity. Mine was ex-Telstra, so I assume it was flogged but no cracks at all.

2003 onwards had a flashable ECU if you were looking to chip it. Earlier ECUs need to be swapped.
