    Rear Power Outlets

Took delivery of our 02 Defender last night.

Haven't had a good chance to go right over it yet but hope to post up some pics tonight.

It has these type of power outlet in the rear. What are they?

Can you get an adaptor to a normal cig lighter plug.

The fridge and other gear that gets swapped from vehicle to vehicle ( 3 vehicles in total ) has a standard cig lighter plug as do the camp lights and other gear.

I have changed all my 12 volt equipment to these plugs, sometimes known as Merit plugs, as they reliably carry 20 amps and I have broken too many cig lighter plugs. Find a shop with a Narva catalogue, they have the plugs and sockets listed. The plug part no. is 82106BL. You could easily make a couple of short adaptor cables as I did for my GPS cable, merit plug to cig socket. There are also dual use plugs which fit both sockets with an adaptor ring, part no. 82110BL.

Sorry theses are all UK web sites but it gives you some pictures.

Over here there called DIN plugs.

You can either replace all your plugs with one of the the top two on this page which work with both types of plug (remove the red bit at the end for DIN sockets and put it back on for cigar lighter sockets.
Din and Power Connectors: Polevolt Ltd

Or you can replace the sockets with ones from this page.
    Cigar Connectors: Polevolt Ltd

Not sure if Polevolt deliver to australia or not but if not i order from them all the time and can post them out to you.

    Pete,
The advantage of this type of plug is they are less prone to vibration as they click in much more positively than a standard lighter socket. The positive pin is held by a spring loaded terminal instead of just pressing against the end.

the only issue i have had is trying to get decent size cable into the plug... they can carry the current... just cant take the size cables!

I added some 12 or 14g cable to the solar to reduce voltage drop (they are a portable panel i made up for use in the car and boat) and struggled like hell to get the wire to fit....

If you use the type of plug shown below you can remove the red part for a merit socket or leave the red piece on for normal cigarette lighter sockets. This allows you to go between cars.
    Jaycar sells them ...

Personally I reckon you'd be better off replacing the lot with Anderson plugs buit that's a whole other story...
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
