    Which clutch kit for 130?

    Hey guys,

I am wondering if any of you fella's know which type of clutch kit would suit a defender 130 300tdi.

Obviously im looking at a heavy duty friction plate, I'm guessing the only difference is the number of coiled springs to prevent rattling against the fly wheel?

I cant tell if the spiggot bush is worn but I might as well replace that as well, Im not sure if it comes with a new kit??

My pressure plate has also let go, one of the splines have cracked off. Im guessing its the vehicles original pressure plate as its a Valeo.

Im also looking at getting a universal clutch kit, Could somebody recommend a good manufacturer or supplier? Universal Im guessing would be both metric and imperial?

Does anyone know which sort of kits would be the best and an approximate price range?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Im a bit new to defenders as my user ID suggests.

    Thanks fella's.

For some reason the 110 and 130 kits have the same part number, but the box specifies the type. Call Rovacraft for a price.

The extra heavyduty non-Land Rover ones are the Pink ones. I can't remember what brand, but they're a bright pink color and cost around $700-$800. They used to be on ebay, so if they're still there you can find who manufactures them.

We use Valeo (Genuine supplier to LR) kits, which are the heavy duty 130 spec, in Disco and Def.
Always replace the spigot bush, AND the fork. Lube the fork pivot well with a good quality grease, and the spigot bush in OIL ONLY. I soak the spigot bushes in engine oil overnight minimum. OR you can force oil into them between two thumbs until it comes out through the 'pores' of the material. This is very important to ensure they last. Grease will not work, as it can burn and coat the inside of the bush, eventually going hard and preventing any lubrication of the surfaces.

When I picked up my 130 from the previous owner. They had installed a "heavy duty clutch". Well I had never felt clutch shudder like this before. The truck would not go up hills in first gear without the need to feather the clutch...it was aweful to drive.

When I replaced the gearbox I replaced this heavy duty clutch (it was the pink exceedy brand) with the genuine 130 clutch. I can't remember the part number.

It was made such a difference. I do tow around 1500kgs in my trailer regularly and the clutch always feels strong.

I beleive the pink exceedy brand clutch is just too heavy.

    Cheers

I put a new Borg and beck (from rovacraft) in about 20000km ago , did not replace the spigot bush. I have just had the gear bag rebuilt and the spigot bush was replaced , it was completely knackered.
I did put the heavy duty unit in as well as beefing up the fork(must do this) The 'old' cluch was only about 40000km old but felt odd, thats why I replaced it, but the fork was already cracking.

The complete kit was only about $375 from memory.

    Good luck

    g'day,

warming up 3.9County's clutch thread as i'm in a similar situation. my '97 130 has done only 127 kms and seems to have the original HD valeo clutch. the engine is already out due to complete rebuild of the ute, but the clutch assembly has not been dismantled yet. there's a slight wear mark on the pressure plate "fingers" (diaphragm springs) from the release bearing. the release bearing body has plenty of play. the eight spring clutch plate appears to be about 7-8 mm thick.

the best option for replacement i've found so far is a kit from ashcroft (valeo). since valeo gets some bad rap on the net, what else have folks been using lately? dingocroft was recommended but their website has disappeared overnight.

the original pressure plate has holes on its side, whereas the new ones seem to be solid. do these holes have a specific function (cooling?)?. how important would it be to upgrade to an aluminium body (as opposed to the OE plastic) release bearing?

    cheers,

    pasi
