"Back Door Shock" - anyone fitted one?

    Hi all,

Am considering buying one of these from Land Rover Tuning: Landrover Tuning :: Back Door Shock

Reason: I park on a slight incline and opening my rear door against the slope is impossible for my kids & wife (dangerous too).

On my old vehicle I had a custom swing-out prop made up which wedged the door open, but this looks like it has the potential to at least lighten the weight needed to hold the door open if not keep it open against the slope.

Just wondering if anyone has it fitted and what their experienced were? LRT lists this as one of the 'best sellers' so I'm guessing one of our members has one.

Have also considered fitting the swing-away wheel holder, but I can't see that reducing effort to open on a slope, just taking weight off the hinges/door.

    Thanks

Derek (DM_TD5) kindly provided me further info - apparently Mulgo (site sponsor) also markets a strut which does not require door trim mods. He also advises the effort to open (a key concern) is significantly eased with a rear wheel carrier - which I was considering fitting.

I also found the the following on the Opposite Lock site:

Defender Rear Wheel Carrier Product code: LRSWCD RRP: $675.00
Land Rover Defender Spare Wheel Mount - Rear Swingaway.
Takes the load off the rear door and hinges. Opens automatically with the rear door.
Suits TDi, TD5 and 2.4i (Puma) models. Included isa bracket to allow fitment to 110 Dual Cab models with the half door.
This is an improved version of the original product and features a nylon tubular bush in the opening mechanism - this bush can be tensioned to help hold the door in the open position along with heavy duty body mounts.
My understanding is most of the OL Defender gear comes fro Dolium anyway (e.g. 45L aux tank).

Am thinking I will buy this one and hopefully kill 2 birds with 1 stone or at least significantly reduce the issue.

    Thanks again Derek...

    Fitted one last week.

The kit was supplied by Daniel at Mulgo and is high quality and complete with comprehensive instruction. Very simple to fit and does not require the rear door trim to cut. It took less than 1 hour.

Only small difficulty is fitting the crush nuts, if you haven’t got the tool, be sure to use hi-tensol bolt and nuts and follow the instructions and you will be right.

The gas strut is powerful and will hold/open the door even on a steep slope. On flat ground you need to keep a hand on the door when opening as it open to fast and bounce on the hinges.

Overall a good idea that makes life that bit easier.

A low cost option is to use Holden hood gas struts. Buy them in pairs on Ebay (they're inexpensive) and use the two L shaped brackets to fit to your LR. Ignore the plastic bits. You'll have to fabricate an extra bracket to fit the body of the vehicle. Easy done with a couple of bits from Bunnings. I fitted one to my defender and it works a treat.

The overhead strut is well and good

However Mulgo's version doesn't reduce the clear opening size from original if you have to sqeeze something through the rear door

I can see some real benefits in that.

350N - is in the kit I supply. If this does not suit it can be changed to a different pressure value.

    Cheers,
