Puma 09 Transmission Vibration on Highway

I have mine in for a strange noise that starts to appear, after about 10/15mins of driving when things have warmed up, when slowing down to say a junction, i can get a louder than normal clunking noise, some times longer some times not, does not make any difference if iam in gear or not, just happens when something in theres begins to slow down and stop, upon the vehicle stopping its self, LRD have looked at it twice, i have also taken the head mechanic out, and he too as heard the noise, but they cant find anything wrong with it, i find it strange as i have never had a new car make such a noise, and i cant take " its a defender so its probably normal " the older 300 tdi never had the noise.

Stranger still, the 110 DC, i had for the day, with 5k on the clock, also made the same noise, but not as intense as mine, and the sales chap who drives it as had it in the shop, but they also found no issues....

Juddy it will be handbrake drag...I can assure you has happened to me 3 times now...

This is the same sound that I have, I told LR when they last had it and told them I suspected it was the handbrake they came back and said it needed a new rear diff, I still think it is the handbrake as it is the same issue dullbird and everyone describes, and sometimes it feels like I am driving with the handbreak on, fells like there is some drag.

I guess I wont know for sure until they have replaced the diff (which they cant get).

Cheers for that, can you expand on the term handbrake drag?? for a numpty like me...

Interesting to read the posts on the handbrake drag issue. I don't have the problem but after reading the posts thought I might try to hear what the noise might be like by trying to "duplicate the fault" by applying the handbrake very very lightly at low speed. The resulting noise sounded as though the whole lot was about to self destruct, and that every part of the drive train was about to be flung out the side of the vehicle. I did this a month ago. I haven't damaged anything but would advise not to try to duplicate the problem like I tried to do. If it is handbrake drag it must be something very strange going on if it is not causing the resulting turmoil I instigated by the light application of the handbrake.


As they say "don't try this at home"!

it is I believe like effectively having the handbrake on....

when the handbrakes get hot on the pumas it all expands then I think the shoes make contact with the drum but not enough to actually stop the car....

I think this is what happens although it has never actually been explained to me.
