Might be the rear differential. They all seem to whine when lifting off from 120kph to 70kph. Noise levels vary from vehicle to vehicle. Told it was normal, feel mine is a little excessive though when compared to others.
Hi All, I have an 09 Puma with 10k on the clock. On the highway yesterday a virbration/grinding noise appeared. I could only reproduce the sound/feel when ever I decelerated from about 110km/h to 100km/h. It did no occur below 100km/h.
It was more apparent from the right side of the car and felt like it was coming more from the rear than the front. Everything checks out ok, the front prop shaft has a lot more play than the rear but nothing out of the usual.??
The clutch has already been changed by LR
Any Ideas?? Thanks

Agree that is likely the issue, but they don't all do it - it's not normal - it is something to be fixed under warranty.

You talking about vibration on a neutral/trailing throttle? Or the whine Cannonball mentioned?
Mine seams to have developed the above mentioned vibration (I'm over 20k) - I mentioned it during the service and was told it LR had stated it was part of normal operation (for want of a better term).
Wasn't too worried about it at the time as it's not that bad and was trying to get a few other issues resolved at the time -one of which is a kind of clunk/pong noise as I take off from the lights - kind of like there's a small amount of play in the diff mounts/swaybar area. Anyway, they never found it and I'm wondering whether they are related.
Rustydog - does yours do this? With the vibration, it seems ours both picked it up at roughly the same mileage - sounds like it's related to premature wear?
I have this problem......I can re create it if I pull away in first slowly and dip the clutch and pull away again and dip and so on and so forth.
its sounds a bit like the exhaust knocking or a bush knocking to me it's very annoying.
I had a very similar sound in my disco and it ended up being bushes
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
n plus one
My problem is a definate grinding/vibration not just a whine, its like I have driven over the ripple strips on the side of the highway. Only happens when I lift my foot off the throttle in gear.??
Will be hard to reproduce to a mechanic unless I get him out on the highway with me.
I think these 2 symptoms are part of the same problem. At any rate - nothing is normal about it. It should be addressed under your warranty.
I've had many examples of issues that LR dealers say are "normal", only to be subsequently fixed when someone like MR point out the exact problem to them.
You need to persevere with the dealers to get it fixed.

I had the 'pong' in my TD5. Seemed to me like when the slack in the prop/diff was being taken up. I had it into the dealer twice. First time they said they fixed it; second time they said it was 'part of being a Defender' - but I think that's rubbish.
If it happens again with my new Puma I will be taking it back until it's fixed. Seems like my instincts were right the first time.
