The first question I was asked when I turned up with my NSW number plates at the Alice Springs Masters Games was,"Did you drive all the way here in that thing?"
The only reply I could come up with at short notice was,"Yes, and last time i drove all the way here it was in a 26 year old Series III Land Rover."
My most recent please explain was last night.
We'd been out to see a concert at the Sydney la-de-da Opera House and offered a lift home to some friends which, as it is hard to find a taxi, they accepted.

Tom says..."My brother had an armour plated ex army one that I used to drive around the back streets of Darlinghurst terrorising the Mercedes SUV drivers."

Most common one: "Interesting car you got there, must cost a fortune to run"
Then I tell them that it averages around 10-11L/100km and they almost drop dead, which I then follow up with, not bad for a 25 year old truck hey... They then quitely walk away.
This one is usually directed at my girlfriend "wow your lucky, you've got a real gentleman that comes around and opens the door for you..."
We both just smile, and ignore the fact that the passenger door doesn't open from the inside...:D
When I got home with my new love (96 defender) My wife said Im not getting in that thing and I dont want it parked out side for all to see.(she thinks anything under 3 stars is camping) My reply was wait until I paint black zebra stripes on it and fit a roof rack so it wont fit in the garage.:angel:
I am very seriously considering doing the same, but using black vinyl stickers instead so I can easily pull them off if I need to. :twisted:Quote:

I remember when I first brought mine home, straight off the showroom floor - the neighbor walked out and said, "Oh - I thought you were buying a new one".
I pulled in to a country service station and the owner was pretty quick to say, hmmm a landrover, you don't see many of them nowadays. I reckon its because parts are hard to get.
My response was to say, there are plenty of places to get parts, even England is cheaper for some.
The trouble is I need a bigger towbar and none of the wreckers have Landrovers, there full of TOYOTA,s..

I think you will find that Defenders have never been made of Birmabright and that is the reason that Defenders are so soft that they need chequerplate reinforcings on the guards.Quote:
