LR has been good with a lot of the warranty issues as members have stated. But looking at the list of things that have gone wrong is quite alarming.
As all the glossy brochure state this car is designed to go most anywhere and be reliable. Now for those who have had a list of major issues it would be quite stressful trying to plan a remote trip with the worry of all these problems or perveived problems occuring. Its great to hear the good posts on those that have had little problems but it seems those with major issues far out weigh the other.
As a person that is currently at the research stage to look at up grading it is certainly cause for concern.

    Hi Jake

In regards to the remote and reliability I have taken mine remote and I will again next year...

despite my cars issues that it has had, it has never left me stranded

A lot of problems you will see are often with either an early car (like mine) or the service centre themselves not servicing and fixing the car adequately
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

It seems to be in the dealers being repaired more often than not.

My main concern is that once the warranty has expired, I will be spending a fortune to keep it on the road.

    • Since new, there has always been a noise and shudder when doing speeds above 90 kM/hr and the motor is neither accelerating nor decelerating, but just coasting along. This is while it is in gear with the clutch released. I have been told that this is when the car is in float.
The noise is a hollow grinding noise. I have had the mechanic detect it whilst on a test run with me. After many repairs I have been told that this is normal...
I think they are saying this as they all know me on a first name basis from the number of times I have had the car in for repairs.

Hi Alex - I had that on my Defender, but it is fixed now. It took just under 8 weeks, and an entire new Differential assembly, a new transfer case, and then a new Diff centre, but now it drives like a car. There is no whine from the diff, and there doesn't seem to be any free play (ie - float) in the transmission at all.

It is a different vehicle now, and a joy to drive.

So next time you go in there, tell them when they are talking to Landrover to mention the 09 Puma that was fixed in Trivett Parramatta for the past 8 weeks. They'll know what you are talking about..... he he.

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Alex,

I also have an 09 Defender and have been putting up with a knocking since new. To solve the problem they have replaced the front and back diff then they were going to do the transfer case, until i insisted that they look at the handbrake which they were very reluctant to do and to there surprise the drum was not round. But getting back to my point when they replaced my rear diff it had a whine at 67Km/h i reported this the day i got the car back and have mentioned it for the last 4 months. Every time telling me that it was normal. I even had various talks to the head mechanic. So last week I rang them and said that i am unhappy and that there are two things that will make me happy 1) they replace the diff 2) they put it in writing that my diff is performing with in spec. The reply from the service person was "would you like me to order you a new diff" and that was it. I don't understand why they refuse to help and do as little as they can to help. In short ask them to put it in writing if they say it is normal.

I get a whining noise on the motorway when I take my foot of the accelerator as soon as I put it back on it goes away, it sounds like it comes from the Diff, I mentioned it to LR and was told it is nothing to worry about, I will tell them to fix it when its next in to the dealer.

I also get a knocking noise when I slow down to a stop, this is becoming more frequent, I wonder if this is connected.

It also crunches in 2nd and 3rd gear and gives a real bang sometimes, some days it is good and other days no matter how gentle you are with it is still crunches.

It goes in a couple of weeks to get a few things done and its 30k service.

New sensor to stop the air con freezing,
New clutch pedal so stop it squeaking
New clock as the light has gone out.

I will add these things to my list to get checked.

The knocking will be your handbrake dragging does it do it after a long run as your slowing down to stop at lights on a slip road, that sort of thing?

Mine has had this happen and it has just started again.

I actually have a video of the noise I will see if I can upload it so you can tell me whether its the same

the gear changes i had this also but when the clutch was done it improved the chages HEAPS!

That's exactly when it does it, usually after the drive from Brissy to the coast and I get off the motorway. Someone mentioned before it could be the handbrake but LR could not replicate it, I will give them another bash when it is in and suggest the hand break this time.

    Thanks.

Exclamation LR Reliability in the Noughties??

What the bloody hell is LR doing? I have a 1995 110 defender with 185k and hasn't let me down. In saying this I spent $9000+ on the ute, but guess what . With PM it has {touch wood ] never let me down. It is my work vehicle and do large KMs.

I have just purchased a "Puma 2010 130 twin cab..Sitting in the shed waiting for a tray to be built,at least another 3-4 weeks for the tray.

I also have a Series 1 Disco with 110k and to date has never let me down. This was purchased new in 1996,brillant little car, great fuel economy.

Believe you me if this new LR gives me grief LR Australia won't know what hit them, I depend on this vehicle to earn income, so drive train issues had bettewr not be an issue!!

You would think 15yrs down the track, vehicle reliability would improve??
Time will tell, but this new vehicle is going to be closely monitored by many onlookers. As many of my peers are 'Rice Burner' owners
