My defender is in its second home trying to get it all sorted....if e get it sorted I will certainly let you know what they did.
Just got mine back from the dealer, my10 6 months old, it went in for 2-3 days and they had it 8, I dont mind at all as long as there is progress on the issues, and I got to drive around in a freelander, felt like a toy but was a nice one, heated seats were great, I digress though.
I have the same noise as you and reported it and they have come back and said the rear diff needs replaced, there is seemingly none available though, must be a lot of them getting replaced, none in the UK either he said.
Not sure what that means for my deefer and if I can go off road or should even risk it. I am hoping it has been correctly diagnosed and it is not just the handbreak issue my I have to trust they know what they are doing.
It went in for its 30k service and:
replacement clock - no light
replacement clutch box - very squeaky
the clunking noise - diagnosed faulty diff
aircon going warm - replaced the de-icing switch
Clunking/ banging when gear change - no fault found
window wipers clunking on return - hard wiper blades so they replaced them at a charge, $52 - dont mind as I like new wipers but think they should last more than 6 months.
And while they were at it they found.
Swivel Balls Leaking - replaced swivel balls seals and gaskets, no idea what these are any one know?
Aircon Flaps inop - replaced A/C box (seemingly the bit thats changes from hot to cold air) again not to sure.
the Clunking is still there but it would be as there are no replacement diffs..
That said a good expierence with the dealer.
He still drives like a truck though, my arms were a bit sore the next day after getting back in him back, freelander turned me soft but I am over it now :)

How was/is the clunking banging in the diff different to the gearbox? I have a rough 2nd to third gear change and LR has said it was normal as well! Is the diff noise distinctly from the rear?

The other noise sounded more like Dullbirds audio recording posted earlier, it is a cyclic noise more like a clunk clunk clunk, it seems to be speed related and I am sure it still goes when I have come to a stop for a few seconds but it is hard to tell, sometimes it is so loud people in the cars next to me look, and the defender actualy shakes. This is the one they seem to be addressing by diagnosing a rear diff issue, but it may fix the thud from the gear change also ( i am hoping)
The crunch in the gear change I will get them to look at again at the next service and I will have to go for a drive with them for them to hear it. it is really annoying, somedays the gears are great and some it does not matter how gentle you are it still crunches, and you can actulay feel the metal grind through the gear stick.

annoying, i actually brought mine second hand from LR in Port melbourne, i took it back and they said gear change is "normal" although it sounds exactly like you say sometimes it good sometimes its bad, it doesnt do it that bad now, maybe im used to finessing it, it seems to be ok if i can get it into neutral just before the clutch pedal stops moving, then ease it into the next gear. i do still get the thud as well when i let the clutch out too fast or with the wrong revs, but without the cyclic thing, will be keen to hear if the diff fixes the clunk,
