    Question centrifuge and RPM help please

    hi there,
    i have just purchased my first 130 which is a '99 defender TD5.
    i have been changing oil and filters to make sure things are up to scratch.
    having taken the top off the centrifuge filter, i have found that it does not turn very freely on the shaft and i am unable to lift it out.
    has any one any ideas how to get it out....am i missing something simple or do i need to use attitude?? i can't see an easy way of coming to grips with it.
    secondly, the vehicle is fitted with a rev counter which is showing 3400 rpm at 100kph in 5th gear [clutch is not slipping]. also shows 1000 rpm when idling although it doesn't sound as if it is racing.
    the previous owner bought the vehicle for towing and i wonder if he ordered it with a lower gear ratio. is there a simple way i can check the tacho? i am in Ballarat and do not have a local land rover dealer.

    a lack of oil change maybe the rotor sunk to the shaft,used some wd40,as for the rev counter,the 3400 rpm seems a bit low for the td5,idle should around 740(-/+)50 rev/min.

    Does the tachometer have TD5 printed on it's face?

    hi coolbigrock and thanks for your input.
    have tried wd40 and didn't seem to make any difference. the rotor is not seized but not free enough to spin and i can't lift it [almost as though suction is holding it]
    as far as the revs are concerned, i have been told that it should run at about 2700rpm at 100kph...would this be right or have i misunderstood? i am not sure if the rev counter is correct.

    hi tombie2,
    the make of the tacho is VDO and it doesn't have TD5 on it. it is a small one put in place of the clock.

    I’ve got an after market rev counter and at 3000RPM according to my sat nav, “speed over ground” is 100KPH. At 3400 I’m doing about 118KPH off the sat nav. This was consistent over 900K’s.

    My next check will be comparing the nanacom (rev counter) to the in dash rev counter to the sat nav.

    This is on a 2001 build TD5 with a chip upgrade (auto logic).

    Hi scot, thanks for that, I would be interested to know how you go with the nanacom comparison.
    I would also be very keen if tombie2 is reading this to know if the tachos marked td5 are speacily for the 5 cylinder motor and possibly giving me a 20% error across the range if my tacho was for a 4 or a 6. your question got me looking at it from a different angle...thanks.

    Mate, i am worried about you not getting the oil rotor out, does not sound good! It should spin freely and taking it out should be really easy. I hope you get it sorted real soon!
    As for the tacho, i have one that says TD5 on it and gives the same readings as mentioned before by "scott oz" - and I thought VDO made one for the 5-cyl as well - in fact I was under the impression that the TD5 branded tacho was a rebranded VDO unit? I could easily be wrong here....

    Thanks xbox, managed to get the filter out with 2 bits of wire coat hanger and bending small hookes on the bottem of them, but i dont think it had been spining for a while.
    As for the RPM I will try to find someone in ballarat with a nanacom, but not to botherd as I bought the car mainly for towing, but would like to know what the storey is.
