Ummm - see post 9???
no it wont stop it shoudl do it every time the car shuts down assuming it is the EGR cleaning itself
As for gear changes you can't come up quick on the defender...however if you have to baby the clutch which I have had to do many times it could be your clutch as my changes improved a lot when this was done..
i also found that a badly adjusted handbrake can also create this.....when My handbrake was recently done the changes where smooth quiet and faultless..then my handbrake played up again and it felt like a bag of **** to drive![]()
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
The noise you describe does sound like the EGR valve cleaning operation. The EGR cleaning operation is a normal operation for the vehicle designed to clear carbon build up on the valve. It is not a problem and does not require repair as it is doing what it is meant to do. You are more likely to notice it in an enclosed area or when the radio is down in volume when you switch the vehicle off. If it does pack it in it will probably throw a fault code and produce a warning light.
The gear change "clunk" seems to be part of the Puma experience. Don't force the change but be positive and operate the clutch gradually and smoothly. The clutch "bite" point in mine tends to be at the 3/4 point of the travel. The technique will develop with a little use. I can get smooth positive gear changes every change and no "clunk". I don't have to drag the clutch to do it. I don't over-rev the engine. You will get used to it. I also tend to give the throttle a nudge in neutral on the down change which also helps produce a smooth shift. I drive it like a truck as it is more a truck than a car!
this forum is great.... I get the gear change right 3/4 of the time when I get it right it's the sweetest gear box I have used, it's a short throw and very slick I just can't get over how nice it goes on the highway compared to my 1999 cruiser ute. It also feels different in paddocks, it seems to negotiate drains and rough terrain in a more stable way than the cruiser used too as well. Right now it reeks of sloppy sheep **** as heaps if it was thrown up underneath yesterday
What is the engine and vehicle?? Was asked earlier.
From the discussion I am assuming a 130 with a Puma engine.
Please indicate engine etc that is being discussed in threads if it is not clear in avatars/signature blocks.
Cheers

However if it makes as much noise as mine, it is faulty. Mine can be heard from inside the house over the stereo, it will also give the noise occasionally whilst driving. It has been like this since last September but I haven't been able to get back to the dealer yet. It's booked in for a couple of weeks time.
So if it is REALLY loud, get it looked at.
