    Things to watch out for

My 33tdi 110 Defender is nearing its 270.000 service. I purchased it with 140,000 km on clock and have had it serviced regularly since. Any mechanical problem has been dealt with quickly. Now my question is that arriving at the milestone is there anything that should be checked in advance to ward off possible problems in the future. There has been some talk re bigends at 300,000km, but anything else???

Will depend on who has been doing the services?Whether the services have been done fully. Some people replace oil and filters, and call that a service!!!
If it has been maintained by someone that understands 4wds and especially Landrovers, then all should just be normal, nothing special.I am always amused when magical mileage numbers pop up.Where things are supposed to happen. There are too many variables, and if you begin worrying about what could go wrong with a Landrover, you will end up with an ulcer
Things to make sure that have been done though, include Timing belt and pulleys,as these are a service by Km item.Never hurts to have valve clearances checked,as a slightly tight valve will not only rob the vehicle of power, but can cause a burnt valve.Wheel bearing adjustment and check the unis for any play.People tend to just pump them full of grease and not check for play, and then wonder why they fail out on the track.
The rest is just regular maintenance.

    Possibly the head gasket.

Motor rebuild at 500K km, fuel pump rebuild but I think you keep driving until something needs to be fixed.

yep, pull the sump and DTI or plasitgauge the big ends, mains journals and the crank thrust. If its in tolerance check the oil pump specs, whack in a new head gasket and call the engine done with a timing belt if you need to (check the service history)
