I think that is where my problem lies. I have a whistling sound coming from the front somewhere, sounds like a window not closed properly. Yes, I have checked all the windows are closed, and yes, I know its a Defender with a lot of holes. But this is a new sound that was not there a while back. I also noticed that I now have an oil leak coming from said I/P shaft.

The question is, how difficult is it to replace the I/P shaft bearing on the front diff? Is there any other way to verify that that is the problem?

remove front prop,, adn drive in difflock,, if the noises go its deffs in the front, so you no you are looking in the right spot, drop the diff oil and see if it looks matalic at all,

Hi Jurgens,

It's quite difficult because you have to reset the pinion height, not a job to be taken on lightly.

As Stig0000 said, I'd drop the oil first to see what it looks like.

Have you checked the brake's yet? They could be full of dust/stones/other nature, or just over worn pads/disks.....

Hi there Stig,

I'll drop the front shaft during lunch and take it for a drive to hear if there is any difference. Over the weekend I lifted one wheel at a time and there was a more profound noise from the front than the rear but only at speed - 5th gear @ idle. I will drain the oil over the weekend to see if there is any signs of metal in there.

Hi there Tim,

I tought that it would not be that easy for a "Weekend Mechanic". I have not checked the breakes as the noise is a bit different, it actually sounds like a shaft that runs loose in a bearing but only from about 80kph. I will give everything a good once-over this weekend before I'll send it in to be checked and fixed.
