    300Tdi 130 spare wheel carrier?

    Good after evening,
I fitted the spare wheel back on the bonnet today and spent an hour and a half down at barberousgello's, to their credit- I wasn't buying anything and they pulled standard rims out to try it out and looked on the microfiche for the answer ....all to no avail..it fits but wheather it's right is another thing.
The question being were 130 defenders actually fitted with bonnet mounted spare wheel carriers ?
the issue seems to be (according to the very helpful chap) wolf rims have a different off-set to standard land rover rims so they sit differently or incorrectly so may not have made it onto the bonnet at all, that being the case mine must have been retro fitted,he is of the mind that they were all fitted to the side of the tub, but I thought that happened at the TD5 stage of the game.
If any of you guys would like to throw your two penny'sworth in I would appreciate the clarificatiom andy

OK, first up, yes Tdi's used the tub mount for the spare, (LH rear corner) and yes, the 130 6.5" rim uses a 20.6mm offset, the standard 110 5.5" rim offset is 33mm, as is the 7.0" Disco rim.

I think I have but can't hold my hand on my heart and swear to it....

I'm sure this has been discussed waaaay back, and the talk was that the extra weight of the 130 rim would/did stuff the bonnet hinges, if not crack the bonnet on a corrugated road.

or is it just the vino talking ??

im not sure that offset would matter....13mm difference in offset, will have to check how much room to move there is on mine

what size tyres are you running

i have not had a problem with 235/85/16 or 7.50/16's using disco rims

i'm just not sure how the offset works....hang on does a 20.6mm offset mean the tyre sits lower on the bonnet mount therefore the rim does not touch the four posts, if this is the case than maybe the offset will stop you from mounting your rims, although just thinking you just need to extend the four post 13mm and you apples

hope i made sense of that

out to brave the cold and check mine

just had a close look at mine, i currently have a 235/85/16 BFG MT KM2 on the bonnet and i cannot get my finger between the tyre and bonnet (closest to the windscreen) soooo any change in offset will either giver you heaps of room and you would loose vision over the bonnet or go the other way which i am guessing is what you have encountered the tyre will foul the bonnet before the rims rest on the posts, taller posts may do the trick or run disco rims

Backspace of the 6.5" rim should be around 103mm, or roughly the same as the 5.5" rim by a couple of quick bashes on the calculator.

My 130 has had a bonnet mounted spare since new. (1996)

It's got a tray one the back instead of the original tub body and no evidence of any other mounting arrangements.

Clearance between a standard 7.50 -16 tyre on the factory 130 rim is about 1 finger width between the bonnet and the fattest part of the tyre.

    It definetely fits!

Having said that, the bonnet has not taken it too well over the years, it has a fatigue crack in the alloy around one of the wheel support rubbers and I have had to repair the steel frame of the bonnet panel near the mounts for the retainer for the rim. The hinges are fine though!

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,
    Mike

Yep, unless a 255/85 is fitted, then it might be a bit tight

And I'm sure I've seen a couple of Tdi 130's running around Quirindi and Tamworth with at least the mounting hardware on the bonnet. They are tray tops like mike_k's one.
