Thread: Disadvantages of 15 inch rims?

I don't think the rim size gets a mention - the limits are on changes in overall diameter, tyre width and track. Of course, the wheels have to be approved to the maximum axle load of the vehicle as well. I would check that you have brake clearance for your selected rims, but I would be surprised if there were a problem there.

I think Qld transport specify that you cannot fit a rim smaller than the smallest rim originally fitted to that model, so technically, by the letter of the law 15" wouldn't be ok on Defenders, although they will fit.

I think that is right, but is it the smallest diameter , or the smallest width, or both?

Pretty sure up here they specify diamater aswell John. I will see if I can find it.

I don't think that is correct (for a passenger or "offroad passenger" vehicle).

The modification guidelines are here. It just mentions overall diameter and width of the wheel and tyre combo - as well as not fouling any brake or suspension components.

Why not just flip the disco rims, i run 255/85/R16 on 10mm offset disco rims, these rub slightly so flipping the rims would be the way to go.

I need the car to drive to work, so the time it would take to get the rims modified would leave me without a car. Not really an option. Plus, it'd be similar money to new rims anyway.

I couldn't find anything in the guidelines about smaller rims not being allowed. I know it used to be you could only increase the rim diametre by 2 inches, but this isn't mentioned either. I wonder if this has changed, as there seem to be a lot of small cars on big inch rims these days.

Brake clearance isn't a problem. I almost bought a defender that ran on 15's with 31 inch tyres.
