    Shopping list for my 2000 model 110

    Hi guys, I am hoping to come into a bit of spending money soon and would like to invest some of it back into the Defender. It's a stock standard model 110 TD5 wagon with bullbar, cargo barrier, snorkel, roofrack and ladder, uhf and some cheap spotties.

    I have already added a false floor in the back with storgae tubs underneath as I'm not convinced I need a full drawer system.

    The things I am leading towards are some new maxis tyres as I am sick of those horrible tubed bridgestones, dual batteries, reversing camera, high lift jack with the Defender tube attachment and a custom awning.

    Is there anything else that someone more knowlegable than myself can suggest? I know very little about mechanical upgrades so would like to hear whats on offer in this area.

    Hopefully I will have some $$$ left after I fix all the oil leaks!!

    Add on's

    If it was me I'd be looking at a spare wheel carrier, if it's done much off road work the chances are the back door, has cracks on the internal structure, that and a long range tank. Bit like a fridge full of food or a shed full of hay, just a good feeling.

    My shopping list for my 300tdi is much like yours. Done a lot of them, the last thing I did was a trip to Dobinsons to replace the standard springs and shocks. If I had my time again, that would have been the first mod. The improvement in ride, handling, comfort (with just a 25-30mm lift) was outstanding. (Just my own experience, FYI.)

    I am halfway down the same street: 02 defender 110 wagon Fitted;
    bullbar, snorkel
    255/85 R16 maxxi bighorns, fit with no lift and have not yet scrubbed on defender alloys
    Rear Hytuff(formely maxi) driveshafts and a detroit locker for the salisbury from lucky8 as at that stage MR in QLD had not finished making the new maxi locker for the rear.
    Today Fitting a suspension lift of 40mm with OME 60070L(landcruiser 80 +3in front) shocks all round, dobinsons springs and a challenge kit from Gwyn lewis in wales.
    Future wants:
    Front stronger driveshafts/cv's to prevent any "accidents" either rovertracks from lucky8, ashcroft or hytuff/MR front maxi locker if they make it (I want to keep the ABS though).
    Spare wheel carrier
    Long range tank
    Duel batteries
    Winch
    Cargo area seats.

    Get rid of the
    1. EGR (Kit say $A120)
    2. cat converter (say engine pipe $A 400)
    3. middle muffler ($A150 for replacement pipe)
    Chip upgrade (Say $A600/$700)

    Fit EGT guage (say $250)
    Head light wiring upgrade (say $A150?)

    Use your hard earned and spend it on a holiday with your Defender and then figure out what is missing. Everyone has their own priorities.

    The reason why you have tubes could be because of the wheels dont have the lipped safety seal and are not able to accept tubeless tyres, so replacement wheels such as Series1 Disco mags or steel wheels may be on your shopping list. The steel wheels can also be offset to improve your stability and turning circle.


    Do you have a fridge? Dual batteries would then be an advantage.

    Long range fuel tanks / water tank, if extended trips are your thing.

    Maxis and diff locks, under guarding if the extreme 4wding is your preference.

    Wise words there, as usual, Erich.

    I have heard off too many people who buy an already capable vehicle and then want to rush in and modify it before they have discovered its capabilities and just what they want to do with it. There's not much point in fitting long range fuel tanks if you are only going to use the vehicle for trips within a few hundred k's of civilisation or fitting diff locks to a touring vehicle.

    My priority with a second hand vehicle would be to ensure that everything was right up to scratch and reliable before spending money on (unnecessary) accessories. There's no point in charging ahead and fitting the long range tank, winch etc if you break down half way to your planned destination! Check - and replace as necessary - seals, bearings, suspension, bushes, steering, brakes, fuel system, electrical systems, clutch etc and while attending to all that, you'll have time to think about how the vehicle will be used and what accessories are necessary.
    Oh - and once you have your accessories list, prioriotise them on a needs and cost basis.

    Most of all though, enjoy getting to know and use your vehicle.

    Definitely going to go with the dual batteries and a headlight upgrade and liking the idea of the wheel carrier as one of the back door bolts is a bit loose.

    Will investigate getting it chipped etc, I am fairly sure our local LR mechanic can handle this.
