Thread: Best sealant for firewall joins

It would need to be flexible, paintable, stick like crazy, and not affected by fish oil/lanoline = baby poop; from memory that sticks to everything .
I'd be wanting to use the same stuff they use in the original seals between panels. Someone told me but I forgot the name: flashtak or something like that? Perhaps a panel beater could tell us. Wouldn't sikaflex remain too flexible? I don't know the answers but apparently the stuff the manufacturers use is available through certain outlets

Go to your Hardware place and have a look at their Sikaflex range....there will be one there to more than suit your needs...........Sikaflex...! ! I just luvs ya.

Sika-flex 227 Body sealant is about as good as you can get.

Once you open the tube the shelf life isn't all that long - a matter of weeks even if you cap it.

If you want to remove panels ie floor panels, try to use glad wrap on one side of the sealant you use, works a treat, especially with sealastic.
I'm reassembling a firewall at present & will use that heavy black bitiminous sealer, doubles as a sound deadener.

Thanks for the floor panel tip Deejay.
I thought of using that bituminous sealer, but wasn't happy with it for the engine side of the firewall as its not resistant to oils etc.
It would be fine on the cabin side though and is easy enough to remove in the future if required by using a solvent soaked rag and a scraper.

I think I'll hit the seams with some penetrol or fish oil to soak into them as much as possible, then once thats dried use the sealant, paint over it and then install some insulation on top.
