Look what these things fetch in the States!

Link to local sales ad: 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 Sport Utility

195,000 km on a '97 and it still brings AU$31,240! They'll get it too. That's the only year the 'Fender was sold in the U.S. (thanks to our insane Dept. of Transportation safety requirements).

They're as rare as hen's teeth around here.

97 was the only year the 90 SW (with Alloy roof as per std UK production was available, as earlier models had fibre glass hardtop option) was sold in the US. The 90 was sold from 94-97MY and circa 6,000 sold...by the end of 98.

Or as they were called in the Uk, NAS 90's ( north American spec)

Pretty much most were auto and came with a 4 ltr v8 ( which is the dicso 3.9v8 rebadged) or 300 tdi but most sold were the v8's

Also most of them were soft top

They all had safety devices roll cage not to look good but to meet US road regs

They were also the first auto defenders and the first 90's to have the fuel tank in the back and not under the drivers seat

I have a nas tow bar on the back of my 90 was made just for the Us Market they were put on Uk 90 as an extra for a bit

Interesting.... I didn't know that about the roll cage.

The Defenders aren't inherently dangerous vehicles in accidents, are they? What's their safety record like?

I don't think a Diesel Defender has ever been officially sold in the US. AFAIK they are all v8's

In the most recent real world UK crash tests I have seen they were the from memory the safest vehicle. Rolling them isn't good however.

Yeah they were but the diesel were not very popular hence why pretty much most of them are v8
I did alot of dealing in the 90's researching for a customer in the us. I had to contact SV at Land rover and get details on them for the customer. Sold him a V8 one that was a mate's who had it in the Uk he said it was not for sale but everything is for sale at a price ( his was an old press truck ) . A week later it was on it's way to LA
