I was ****ed off when mine did the big ends, but it fits neatly in that range of VIN's JC has noted seemed to do a few cranks.

The crank was fine, and there was no wear on the shells, (I credit the premium oils) but the overlay was de-laminating in patches and stress fractures across the shells abound.
The rods checked out OK for roundness, so it was either crap bearings or the rods distorting under load and I think a lack of adequate oil cooling with the stock cooler contributed too. (There are some steep hills around here, it cops a caning)

Then you have those like Serg/unimformed's whose Defender was book serviced and well looked after but still failed at too low a km. (spun a bearing, unsurprisingly similar VIN to mine)

Rick, we are getting a bit OT, but just another note, I have a 'WA' (1998) VIN D1 in at the moment with a delaminated big end (Which was quite audible)that actually failed and locked the engine while the owner was unloading it from the trailer

It was being driven while 'knocking' apparently, and when the noise got real bad it was trailered in. When the crank was inspected, one shell had actually slipped UNDER the other, 'wedge' locking the crank. The crank is ruined, and the rod also. ALL other big end shells were showing delaminations. Motor was quite OK otherwise, and will get a crank, a rod, a full set of shells, a hone and re ring. Bores are immaculate and only 245K.
Thats another WA VIN Tdi for the list
