    Front Diff/hub oil capacity

    G'day All

I have just conveted the front end of my 2002 130 to oil lubed bearings (KAM CV,s, axles and fusible stubs). Does anyone know how many litres of oil is required to fill the diff and service the bearings? The diff takes 1.7 litres. I would love to know (with confidence) how much more it takes to lube out to the bearings.

    Cheers

    0.35L per side

But you fill them via the filler plug and level plug on the swivel housing

Just beside the seal. The filler plug is on top with a square head (1/2 spanner)

Next one down hiding behind the steering stop is the level plug (7/16 spanner)

One on the bottom is your drain (7/16 spanner as well)

Thats if a Td5 front diff is the same as a 110 Tdi diff, pretty sure it is

Didn't come out to well but you get the idea

    Thanks Jock

The front swivel housings dont have a level plug or drain plug. I guess when they changed to greased bearings they figured they wouldn't be required.

Just confirming, do you run your bearings and diff as one compartment. That would mean fill the diff to the filler plug level then add 70mm of oil to the swivel hubs to reach the correct level throughout the diff and swivel hubs.

    Cheers

Na mine are slightly different, the two swivel housings and the diff are all seperate. So they are all drained and refilled seperately

Which seals did you knock out?

I went as per JCs recomendations which was to knock out the seal inside the stub axle.

The seals on the axles behind the swivel housing (where it bolts to the diff housing)

Apparently there is a bit of a lip there so the mechanic said he filled the diff to the filler level and then filled the hubs untill the oil ran out of the filler in the diff. He then must have added some more for good measure as when I drained it the diff was overfull.
