    Question Very odd

I fitted 8x16 performance alloys and 265/75 16 Toyo M/T to the Puma 12 months ago and within hours got wheel wobble. I had them re balanced but still the problem persisted to the point that I would rather go away in the wifes 90, I just thought it was my tyre choice. Over the next few months I am getting the Puma set up for a top end fishing trip, towing the boat ect and the thought of 10-12 hours of intermittent wheel wobble does not compute. A suspension expert here in Perth found the centre caps (steel) that push in from the hub side of the wheel were causing drama so I modified this but the wobble continued, but far less evident. Fed up, I today changed the rims and tyres with the wifes AT' of her 90. They are 235/85 16. Its a changed vehicle, its like new, no steering problems ie wobble. The very odd thing is the 90 does'nt either. This I cannot understand. It drives almost the same, only thing I can pick is self centring not as good. Any idea as to why, wheel base maybe?

Return to centre steering dampener (the coil over type) will only help the situation. Had a similar situation with my last patrol after I lifted it and fitted bigger boots. If your wheel alignment was out it would show up as ‘feathering’ or wear on you front tyres, either on the inner or outer edge. Not both, both edges means incorrect tyre inflation. Initially when I was reading your tread, I was thinking of defect in the tyre/s. But seeing how you have fitted them to another vehicle and the problem seems to have disappeared, I’d have to count that out. On vehicle balancing would be another option I would look at. You’ll have to ring round for that, not all tyre stores have an on vehicle balancer. Diffan’s in Mirrabooka I think have one? I’ve had the odd occasion were I had to balance the wheels on the vehicle because of a similar vibration. Rim off set might be magnifying the vibration. Then again why doesn’t it show up when their fitted to the 90? I would try the return to centre steering damper and the on vehicle balancing. Good luck.

I fitted a Terra Fima return to centre damper when I found I had a problem, and had Wilkinsons do the wheel align and balance, I dont think anyone better. Tyre ware is ok, wobble speed was not constant. On the 90 its not there at all. Its very odd. I think the Puma doesn't like the offset as you suggest.

Did you fit the front wheels from Puma to the front of the 90.

An old trick if you have an out of balance front wheel which causes wobble is to put it on the back - no more problem usually.

Yes, thats why I find it odd. All wheels in same location just changed vehicle.

I would be inclined for experiments sake, to put them back on the puma and see if the problem has returned.

If it has might be worth investigating the differences between the puma and the TD5 hub to see what could be causing it. perhaps its a simple case of slight damage that only that particular design wheel has managed to pick up on.

I would also if you put them back on....with the fronts one by one swap out with the spare to see if it makes a difference, to see if you can isolate which wheel it could be or at least side.

I tried swapping them over front to rear, spare ect yesterday for four and a half hours, I could hardly move after, but no luck. I can't see any cause ie damage. Had the dealer check the front end at service but no joy, they just don't seem to work on my vehicle.

1 jack up the front end and with a Bar wiggle every thing.
greater offset and bigger rubber may show up any sloppiness which your dealer may not wish to deal with.

2 check the wheel alignment yourself, just use a tape. if the wheels are not parallel make them so, if they are move the front of the rims in 2-3 mm

3 stand back and look at the front, are the wheels vertical or is one on a bit of a lean

4 check tire pressures are all the same, check again. I know you know they are but do it any way just for fun

I would also set a screwdriver/pointer up on a couple of bricks or whatever, about 1MM from a rim edge with the axle up on jack stands . Then turn the wheel and look for axial and radial runout compared to the pointer. Any more than a couple of MM is bad.
