    Puma Snorkel install problem

    Hi,
I'm about half way installing a snorkel on my Defender 130, as per the instructions.

I've got to the point of drilling out the 6 mounting rivets at the bottom of the Air Filter box.

Next I want to seal the air entry duct into the air cleaner base inlet snout as per below.

My problem is getting the air filter box out. The 6 rivets are drilled out and are not holding the box. It seems like a drain hose is holding it in, but I'm not too sure how hard I need to 'persuade' it to come out.

Any one else done this recently?

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    cheers

PM Bundalene he has just stripped one down. I thought the air box was only held in by some rubber plugs.

I think like Dmdigital said it's just sitting on a rubber grommet thingy. I had mine 90% out today but I just pulled and it came??

    Not sure??

    Cheers.

Hi Dave, yes, just pull it up and the rubber 'plug' comes out. When reinstalling, use a little silicon spray or crc.

I can't take any pics of the air cleaner bracket as this is still attached to the inner guard which is at the firbreglass repair shop being fixed. This is what an air cleaner looks like:

    Hi,
Thanks for the help, I was getting a bit nervous/discouraged there for a while.
It lifted up (but not out) enough to get the goop into the inlet and enough free space to put goop around the pipe end that goes into it and I think I got a pretty good joint with out making a mess with the sikaflex.

I used a couple of small freezer bags as a glove, to finger the goop around, changing bags as soon as they got messy, and thus kept the stuff from getting every where.
I was going to try and put a pipe on the water drain in the air filter box, but the outlet is the wrong shape and I can't get the thing out to work on it.

The idea was to run the pipe some where accessible to be able to block it if nervous about a water crossing. However it should be easy enough to pop the air filter out and stick a bit of blue tack in the hole if necessary.

I will block the drain at the bottom of the first air inlet where it comes in through the guard, the rubber flap valve does not seem all that water resistant, and with the amount of very fine road gravel in that area, it would probably jam open any way.

For a vehicle with diff breathers as standard, I'm a little surprised that the air intake system was not a little better sealed. But I haven't any prior experience with other 4wd to compare it with other makes.

The online instructions have a few variations to the printed version that came in the box, with a few extra places to put sealant where the snorkel joins the guard and where the ducting continues from the guard it is just pushed together, which I didn't realise, so these have been gooped as well. The snorkel did come with a gasket to seal against the guard, so I won't put too much sealant there.

Well back to it - the sikaflex should be dry now and I've finished my coffee.

    On on etc

    cheers

I found that water was being sucked in through the drain hole in the bottom of the filter box when doing some water crossings so I've fitted a small fuel filter to allow water out but not back in. Hope it works!

    Hi,
well its is all done and dusted, many thanks to all for the posts.

I noticed a water line just inside the original air inlet, it had been about 2 cm deep, not yet ready to over flow to the first drain valve.
I gooped up this drain valve, pulling the rubber flapper out left a hole in the centre that I fitted a length of clear plastic tube into and gooping it all together.
The tube is supported by a cable tie around one of the mudguard liner bolts and tucks up beside the brake booster.
My thinking is that this will be easy to spot if it is collecting rain water, and easy to drain if it has. I will probably block the hole in the Air Filter box permanently. - Still thinking on that one.
It will be interesting to see if the snorkel draining system at the ram head is effective in heavy rain.

Bunyip110, I'm not sure that your fuel filter will act as a one way valve, the only ones I have seen definitely have a flow direction marked on them, but that is to allow dirt to drop away from the filter element to the body on the outside of the filter, rather than hold it inside the filter element as would happen if you passed the fuel through it the wrong way.

    cheers
