Its all a trade off.
Technically you will get the best reception if you mount the aerial in the middle of the roof... but you will also break it off the first tree you drive under.
I have on mount on each side of the bull bar. Keeps the leads shorter (radios on a roof console). I remove the aerials from their mounts when not in use.. save for them being stolen or broken.
Spare wheel carrier is a good idea for a UHF too, but you would have to drill holes in panels which I try to avoid.
