Thread: UHF Aerial Mast Location on Deefer

Its all a trade off.

Technically you will get the best reception if you mount the aerial in the middle of the roof... but you will also break it off the first tree you drive under.

I have on mount on each side of the bull bar. Keeps the leads shorter (radios on a roof console). I remove the aerials from their mounts when not in use.. save for them being stolen or broken.

Spare wheel carrier is a good idea for a UHF too, but you would have to drill holes in panels which I try to avoid.

Previous owner fitted mine to the bull bar ... driver side, I'm fine with it there.

Mine is on the bullbar.

I had a gutter mount aerial on the Disco first on the side and then I moved it to the rear. You could do this on the Defender but you would have the problem of hitting overhead obstacles with the antenna. I would usually put on a short antenna (3dba) for off road and city carparks using the longer 6dba for highway travel.

This is the only photo of the gutter mount I could find. The aerial is on the left hand side of the door and consisted of a GME gutter Mount and a Spring based ground independant aerial. I also fabricated a metal bracket to lower the height a little. The short antenna is shown:

It has caused the panel to flex slightly though.

Mines on the bar, passenger side- makes a good visual gauge for low branches to roof height

having a tray, mine is on the top of the headboard, along with the GPS receiver.
