Sure mine wasn't a special windscreen, but it was replaced this morning (Premier Glass, Sydney), took about 15 minutes in the rain, and cost me near nothing as its part of GIO insurance to get one piece of glass replaced free per year (don't pay excess or lose rating either)
No problems at all, except two trim screws were rounded before today so couldn't be put back in
P.S. I will never use O'Briens either. I have my reason

I got a quote if $1200 from my local stealer
i ended up putting in a normal screen for $225. With the screen being flat it offers no deflection for stones and i collected 8 stars in 1 year so i will sacrafice this screen and fit an original heated one when i come to sell it. My heated one never worked that well anyway.

I have similar issue with rear door glass for 09 Puma - stone from a truck shattered as passed by me on the M1! Replacement quotes vary from $598 to $826. My insurance (just car) will cover w/o affecting my rating/claim status but just pay excess of $500. I guess it's still worth going the insurance option but going to research if cheaper option.
I've heard of some getting tempered glass cut w/o demister and just living with that?

I had to do the tempered plate glass thing in the past. Working Central Africa makes Land Rover the perfect vehicle (As if there was any doubt!) due to many reasons including the fact that all major glass is completely flat. I had a number of windscreens on 300Tdi's, left passenger window and rear sliding windows cut from sheets for a small bundle of dollars. I haven't done the rear one though. They don't break that often, even in crashes, so the chances of finding one at the breakers is always good. Depending on where you live, not having demisters might be a bit of a pain.

Giving credit where credit's due:
2 x stone chips after last trip, w/screen replaced by O'Briens on insurance (Shannons). Cost to me - $0. W/screen was Chinese XYG. What a piece of crap. More waves than the Pacific Ocean, makes you seasick to look out of. Do not ever let anyone replace your w/screen with XYG brand.
Rang up O'Briens who rang Shannons who authorized ordering a genuine OE w/screen from UK (have to wait 3 weeks) all at a cost to me of $0.
Gotta be happy with that.
