Thread: td5 coolant

I wouldn't worry about always getting 'genuine coolant'.

As long as you use a 50-50 mix of good anti-freeze & distilled/filtered water, you will be fine.

You can buy the ready-made coolant from auto parts shops, or you can buy the anti-freeze and then dilute it yourself.

I would say use the genuine stuff that you have and once that is used up, just get a good quality anti-freeze and dilute yourself, and keep a bottle of the ready-made in the truck at all times.

Also, it is a good idea to install a Madman-type engine monitoring system, it will warn you of coolant loss way before your Td5 cooks - it is prone to do this within minutes of losing coolant.

Make sure it is OAT coolant, not Glycol based.

and OAT coolant is a nice red/orange colour. There is a reason LR specify OAT.

I'll start by ordering you a radiator, a heater matrix and some O rings for your fuel cooler.

Clean it all out and use Glycol based off the shelf green stuff that exceeds and covers GMH spec and you'll be fine.

And MR auto here advise the same.They did mine last time with a Valvoline green product,G5 or something similar.These guys are LR specialists.

The TD5 cant be simply flushed to rid it totally of coolant.
When my clutch was done the repairer used GREEN penrite coolant assuring me the OAT was fully flushed.
When I did my cooling system rebuild last week,1000ks since the green went in the coolant was more redish than green.
The seperate section on the radiator that has connects to the fuel cooler was red,hadnt even mixed with the green.
I flushed many times with water before stripping the cooling system and again after.
I realise there are those who like/dislike OAT.I believe all these TD5 cooling system failures we hear about,oil coolers particularly are caused by running a combination of the red and green coolants which are incompatible.
I was VERY impressed with the grey coating on all visible alloy components that the OAT was in contact with in my engine.For an engine with 252000ks/almost 12 years under its belt the components are in excellent condition.

I don't disagree as such with your experience Andy, but I flush these TOTALLY, and have never had a problem with mixing of fluids yet. From what I have seen, over the years I have worked on these engines, including the V8 D2's, where OAT has been responsible for external leaks from as early as 60,000km, is that IMO OAT does more harm than good. MY opinion only.

I'm glad yours is in such good condition, its a good start for the longevity of the vehicle.
