Rear Main Seal - How long can I leave this?

You long time defender blokes. Its not even dripping yet, just "weeping" best describes it - a smear of oil after 2000km. The shed floor is clean. Dealer wants to change it of course but $1,600!!! Cant I just keep topping up for a while and enjoy the fact that I'm finally leaking something (42,000km Puma).

considering the labour involved, pulling gear box, dropping sump, etc, yep at dealership labour rates quiet acheivable. the seals in only about $10 the rest would be labour. Bend over, touch your toes, smile and open the wallet

And just be 100% it isn't trans oil, front input seal leaks will drip out the bellhousing, and as the oil collects clutch dust etc on the way out, it can look like engine oil...

Check other things first , as normally rear main leaking means more siorous things. Crank case pressure normally makes the rear main leak. That is normally from the head gasket or from worn piston rings

And I don't think that has happened on your puma. Well I bloody hope not

    C'mon guys, get with it.

The OP has said he's been to a dealer. The dealer has diagnosed a rear main oil seal leak.

    End of story.
    Simple.
