    130 lock up

I was driving my 99 130 the other night when suddenly it made very loud clunking noises then suddenly the front left tyre locked up and about 2 seconds after the front left locked up, i went to take up drive again and at first there was a clunking noise when i took up drive but that went away after about 10 seconds, its now making a weird noise which is almost like a whining noise and a grinding noise in one. Any advice to what it may be would be very much appreciated

    130 lock up

I was driving my 99 130 the other night when suddenly it made very loud clunking noises then suddenly the front left tyre locked up and about 2 seconds after the front right locked up, i went to take up drive again and at first there was a clunking noise when i took up drive but that went away after about 10 seconds, its now making a weird noise which is almost like a whining noise and a grinding noise in one, i drained the diff today and there was no metal filings to be found, the wheels are also now a few degrees outwards Any advice to what it may be would be very much appreciated

Without doubt a wheel bearing would be the culprit. I have seen a D1 change lanes luckily noone was coming the other way after a front wheel bearing siezed. Flat spotted a tyre and nearly killed the occupants.

GET THE WHEEL BEARINGS SERVICED/CHECKED AT REGULAR INTERVALS!!!!

Agree 100%! Been there myself - M42 Motorway between Birmingham and Nottingham, UK. Lost the left front WB @ 60mph and swerved across 2 lanes before I regained control. Sunday morning, so limited traffic - very lucky!

Replaced all 4 sets and found right front on the verge of collapsing and rear set rust specked and starting to grate.

Warm, oily voids passing through cold water = guaranteed water ingress through seals! Air cools, contracts and sucks moisture in. Often or regular water crossings require more preventative maintenance...

RTC3511 hub seals can help enormously here

    Definitely!

Back to the old debate of oil filled diffs, axles and hubs off the older 110 vs the separately sealed hubs of the 300Tdi onwards...
