			Defender TD5 Speedo lights

					Hi all

One of the lights that illuminate the speedo in my 2000 TD5 130 Defender has stopped working.

I have pulled the dash apart and removed the speedo however I have been unable to determine the best way to remove what I think is the globe as it is very deeply recessed into the speedo housing.

Is anyone able to advise on the best tool or way to remove the globe so that it can be replaced.

 Many thanks

 Allan

I'm sure there is a better tool for it, but I just checked on one I have sitting here and a 1/4" drive - 5/16" square socket just has enough grip to do it.

In case I've got the terminology wrong, by square socket I mean one of those (normally) useless star looking sockets that often come in cheap socket sets.

last time i had to replace one of mine I found a pair of scissors that had an end like long nose pliers.

I could grab it no problem, but the twisting and grabbing was a pain! A little patience though and it all worked out fine!

I bet its the left hand side one thats gone, not the "no need to use" right hand side one!!

 Regards,
 Jon

I used 2 flat head screw drivers down each side of the holder then hold both together and turn.

Is it actually completely broken or is it intermittent?

Only reason I ask is I thought mine was broken when actually it was the first tell tale signs of my headlight switch on the way out...

It seems to be broken as the globe on the lhs has stopped working, the globe on the rhs is still working fine.

					Hi
Thanks to every one who provided a suggestion. I have managed to get the globe out using the two screw drivers method.

After having difficulty in refitting the replacement globe using the same method I went through my stuff and came up with better solution being a small length of approx 12 mil Aluminium tubing that I squashed the end into an approx square shape. This just fits nicely on the globe as well as fitting into the recess the globe is housed in. Removal or replacement of the globe with this is now dead easy.

I have also taken up Tombies suggestion and have ordered some Led globes to replace both speed globes.
