    200TDi still screeching

OK, I got my vehicle serviced last week, basic grease and oil and ever since the turbo is making a whistling / screeching noise. Not that loud but enough to notice. The oil on the dipstick was about cm over the high level so I drained a half a litre or so out but has made no difference. But it must be due to something that was done during the service. Am assuming it's the turbo as whatever it is is going a lot more RPM than the engine and it kicks in at high revs. Hard to describe. It's nearly like a
bearing / mechanical noise, but just audible above the engine noise.
I've checked the hoses for cracks etc.
    What I have noticed....

*Only happens after the vehicle has warmed up
*Seems to happen only in 2nd and 3rd gear, maybe a bit in fourth
*Only happens after 2500rpm or if I give it a boot full
*Doesn't seem to make the noise when reving the engine hard out of gear

I don't think they replaced the air filter but they probably removed and inspected it. Would it make the turbo noisier if they didn't seal the air cleaner properly or could they have put the filter back in incorrectly?

I had a look around the net and you tube and it does sound like it's normal for the 200TDI's turbo to be a bit noisey when it kicks in. Maybe it wasn't going before and now it is?

Apologies if you've done this already (previous post?)... It sound like it's only happening under load. You've checked all the hoses and clamps?

If you've got even the smallest amount of air escaping anywhere you'll get that screech/whistle thing. As it only happens under load it is a bit of a bugger to trace though.

Agree with loubrey, have driven trucks with a boost leak and it sounds like air escaping from a pinched off balloon.

If the above comes to nought then there is another possibility.. and that's the apparent timing of the noise is just coincidence.

Last time I had screeching noises it was the bearings in the air con idler & tensioner pulleys. Just a thought.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Trouble is getting a chance to look at it / hear it under the bonnet while driving along. Doesn't seem to do it when the engine is revved hard out of gear

Does do it only under load. I removed the air filter to make sure it was fitted ok. Undid the hoses and redid right up properly and didn't make a lick of difference.

Vlad, Yes I forgot about that tension pulley!

Fender, have a go at wiggling the serpentine belt (main fan belt) tension pulley. It should obviously not have any movement on it other than rolling and under tension you shouldn't be able to do that either. The bearing on those let go quite often and it gives off an awful screech when it's on it's way out. Not an expensive fix either.

I checked the idler pulley on the air con and it definitely has a bit of wobble / play in it. May be the culprit eh?

Definitely a suspect... Give it a squirt of spray oil (WD40 or similar) as close to in the bearing you can manage and see if it quietens down. It will only be for a minute or so, but it will give you a clear indication if that's the problem.

Mind you "a bit of wobble" sounds like it might be past that already!

Thanks heaps mate. I'd bet my left one that's the problem unless there's 2 issues :-(
Still can't really see why it would only do it when in gear and under load though. Won't screech when I rev hard in neutral. Doesn't make any difference if I have the air con on or off either

Took it back to the mechanic that did the service this morning.
Had them check the idler pulley and was certain that must have been the culprit. They replaced it and still making the same noise. Advised me to take it to a turbo specialist to check it.

Just before they closed the bonnet today, the mechanic started playing around with the air filter drum. I did notice it didn't seem very secure after the service the other day but figured that must be how it was. The clips over the top were done up ok.
He was playing around with it and obviously it must have to be seated properly from underneath as well as the clips over the top. He must have positioned it properly, did the clips up and it was solid as a rock. Got in the car and drove home and was good as gold! Was the bloody air cleaner can vibrating all along
