    A question about Air conditioners

    Please excuse my ignorance but I dont have air con and would like to know the following:-
    1) what path does the air follow to get into the air conditioner.
    2) does the air con in a defender have a "recycled" selection.
    3) if fitting air con to a defender how does this interact with the current fan heater?
    Basic questions I know but I dont know the answers so any help appreciated.

    I'm no expert mate but I did have mine in bits today.

    Looks like the air is drawn from around passenger footwell area as thats where the bulky unit is and the air blows from here to the 4 vents .

    AFAIK there is no recirc function as it's just on or off at different speeds / intensity.

    The fans and heaters controlled by the slides on the top right of the dash is separate and work independently of the a/c

    Interesting. Discovered that everything needed for air con is installed under the bonnet but no in car components. Got to thinking about how the in car unit would recirculate and I couldnt see an obvious way.
    Everyone says how lousy the standard aircon is and the lack of recirc would cause a major loss of efficiency but there is so little space to put a unit other than where the std unit goes. I know that people have put them on the headliner, others have taken out the centre storage consul and put red dot units there.
    Has anyone installed a unit under the back seat (talking a 130 crewcab) and just had the air blowing into the rear foot well area?

    The 300Tdi with the a/c in the passanger footwell is always on recirc, problem is small unit and big volume and glass area

    The Puma deefers have good a/c by all accounts.

    Pretty sure the TD5 setup is recirc only as well, that gives it half a chance. Still lousy though

    The evaporator, TX valve and blower are usually in the cabin on the defender units... and yes, they are recirc, drawing air from the passenger footwell.
    If you have no in car components, then you may have an A/C unit from a county? this may be a good option as the unit would be cooling a smaller area in a DC compared to a SW.

    The issue with installing the unit under the rear seat is A. getting it plumbed in, it's a long way from the compressor...and B. it always feels better blowing on you. May be a better idea to get it installed under the drivers seat, then you could have an outlet on the front AND rear of the cubby box.
