wait till the engine is really cold like in the morning start it up and run your fingers over all the hoses and connectors.
I have had at least two occasions where I had a hose leaking just enough to let out a few drops and as the engine was hot it evaporated and i never noticed.

if the 4.6 still has the two heater hoses going through the firewall give the a good check.

Most likely with these symptoms you have a blown head gasket or a slipped sleeve or both.

Head gaskets usually leak to atmosphere so get under and look at each end of both heads where they join the block. Also look at the water pump bearing drain.

To preliminarily check the sleeves, take out the plugs while cold and see if there is any condensation on one plug. Also see whether one plug looks cleaner than the others.

Chuck a bottle of Stop Leak or similar into the radiator and see what happens: a well-known writer that contributes to LRO UK magazine and owns his own workshop does that on 4.6 V8s with suspect liners or suspect porous blocks, and reckons it fixes the problem about 75% of the time with no ill effects.

    Worth a try instead of a strip-down?
