quick fix needed for fuel leak

    Hey all,

I was wondering can anyone help me....Ive just bought a 110 300tdi 1998 pickup. The seller naturally neglected to tell me about a somewhat major fuel leak from the metal curved section of pipe coming out of the top of the tank. I think its simply rusted through. Im not too bothered about going after him because I hardly paid very much for the truck but unfortuntaltely Im 600 miles from home and need to get the vehicle back. Im near Inverness (in scotland ) for anyone thats interested and I need to get back to Cork in southern Ireland.

Id heard that soap worked and I could cake the whole area in the stuff to try and stem it a wee bit but does anyone know does this actually work or have any other suggestions? If the worst comes to the worst I'll just get a jerry can in the cab and connect onto the fuel line with a length of fuel pipe which I can either get tomorrow or Monday.

Any suggestions would be greatfully apreciated!

    Thanks,
    H

if its a bit of pipe you can sleeve it with some rubber fuel hose or simply cut it short and replace it your best bet is going to be sanding it back and soldering it up.

as a temporary fix you can try wrapping it in waxed string and then soaping over the top of the string but you're liely to get more success from drying it as best you can then wrapping it tightly in alfoil then sealing it up with some fuel resistant sealastic, sikaflex or gasket maker, or bypainting the alfoil with hylomar #3 (aka non hardening aviation sealer #3 aka loctite non hardening sealer #3 aka that sticky brown stuff that always leaks out of the bottle and makes a mess in your tool box) prior to wrapping the pipe.

how about just short filling it till you get home,
like only put in half a tank of fuel,
and stop for fuel more often.

    hey,

it seems to be from the pickup pipe so doesnt leak when not running. I'll have a look around and see if i can get some sort of chemical metal...

Sounds more like it is coming from the fuel return line, check the clamp on the end of the hose.

Yes, if all else fails a bar of soap on the hole works. I've used the method before & know of it as an old bushmans repair.

Same problem occurred on my 300 tdi when still under warranty while up at cape york. Used epoxy putty to repair - just drain tank and clean area well first. Lasted for our trip round Aust until LRA could get their act together and replace the tank. This was a saga in itself - booked it in Darwin and asked them to replace tank while we flew home. When I got back to pick up car they said they could not find a leak but had replaced the fuel cap which was weeping! - even after I had explained what had been done. Did not want to wait around for new tank so headed off down the road about 600ks to find out that they had given us incorrect key for new cap! So had to remove locked cap with multigrips! Finally LRA replaced tank and cap in Albany WA. Drove about 500km down road to find fuel pouring out from under car. Had incorrectly fitted sender - total botch job and was now leaking - finally repaired in Esperance Incidentally 250,000 ks later tank now leaks from rust holes in top - However, I am more tolerant of landrover ways now and just don't fill it up to top anymore

    Hey all,

I thought that Id post up a conclusion so that anyone searching for it in future can find some info. It was the return pipe on the top of the tank. In my haste I thought that it was the pickup pipe, having worked on discoverys in the past.

I slowly cleaned it with a screwdriver and then managed to get some chemical stop leak and that has managed to stem the leak. Ive since aranged a replacement and that will be fitted when I get home and have access to a new jubilee clip.

    Thanks all,

    H
