I bought a brick sized stainless steel 20 plate heat exchanger from ebay, commonly used for bio-fuel set ups. It was about a third the price of the copper coil ones, and I figured the flat plates would allow for bettter heat exchange, plus I hoped that the s/s might allow food grade water warming, which the copper ones advise against. It gets the water to over 40.C on the first pass, so has proved quite effective. I recently upgraded to a 17lpm pressure switched water pump, and even with the faster flow rate, it's still hot.

I'm just about to do an order with my laser cutter for work, so I thought I'd get a quote for wingtop vents just for interest.

SS 304 #4 2mm $30ea

SS 304 #4 3mm $41.50ea

Alum 3mm $38.50ea

The quote was based on this picture, but the design could vary a bit without greatly affecting the price.

I've asked for a quote using 3mm plain steel. I'll let you know if it would be much cheaper when they get back to me.

That design using larger round holes is cheaper to cut, and probably just as good. There is only ~150 holes there. The small square hole design has ~220 holes. Fewer holes means less cut length (so cheaper). Round holes also have a smaller cut lenth than square holes, so cheaper again.

I am sure that those on the west coast could get the design above cut by adam for the same or less (though get in quick before he moves to tassie!).

How 'bad' would it be to blank off the wingtop vent, then open a breathing hole on the inside of the intake box. Nice toasty warm air from off the turbo >>>> will have to duct it around the water bottle. Or maybe just remove the feeder box and screen the fan inlet?

No good if you have the vent feeding aircon, but I only use the ducting to keep the windscreen from fogging in the rain. My right side sliders are rusted stuck at HOT and WINDSCREEN.

I may try it and report back!

I realised the previous quote was for one item including programming which would be about $15.
These would be the prices if an order was placed for 20.
There's not much difference in price between the different thicknesses so I'd be going for 3mm stainless if I was to get them done.

What is the possibility of making a batch of plates for the driver side with a 100mm long piece of 3" pipe welded perpendicular through the plate as part of a snorkel set up?

For me it's a toss up between alloy 3mm, SS 3mm, or plastic from the UK! SS might be the strongest, alloy the best suited to match up to the alloy panels, and plastic the cheapest. In all reality, the plastic lasted 15 years on both my Defenders before being cracked, so their not exactly flimsy.

How long before you place an order?
