    Snorkel installation and aerial relocation?

I have a 2006 110 TD5 which I would like to install a snorkel (Safari). I have read occasionally that it is required to relocated the radio antenna for installation, but other notes on this don't mention it at all. Any feedback???

    Cheers

I had to move the aerial slightly forward, you will need a hole saw, 20mm if I recall correctly.
The kit comes with a rubber bung for the old hole
The instructions come with the safari snorkel.
    Mine is a td5 02 defender Xtreme 110.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

    Part 2

First of all, Paul Thanks. Now I just have to decide on how badly I want an extra hole in the body work.

Secondly, I have checked through many of the existing forums on this subject and there seems to be a split decision: Does a snorkel (in this case Safari) actually hinder/ restritct airflow or increase airflow and subsequent quality (cleaner/ cooler).
Many topics discuss that a snorkel by design increases the resistance to airflow, yet others say the 'ram' section of the Safari negates that effect.... if not improves it.

The addition to this is, future plans are to 'remap' or 'chip' the TD5. Has anyone had experiences with the increased demand for O2 being thwarted by a snorkel?

The following is quoted from the "technical" forum regarding this discussion. Though it is with a Mantec snorkel on (No 'ram' effect at high speed) I thought it gives some objective data.

"I recently had my Discovery on a 4x4 rolling road and was able to do some power runs with and without the Mantec fitted.
The blue curve was with the Mantec fitted @ 98.9hp at the wheel and the orange curve of 103.1hp is with the Mantec removed from the airbox.

The guy doing my mapping was Mark Adams from the UK who for those who don't know him is probably the most knowlegable man on the planet when it comes to the 14CUX.
Mark told me that he'd seen poorly designed snorkels giving a drop in hp of upto 35%...I won't mention the brand of snorkel on an open forum but it was from a reputed supplier out of the UK. It's not Safari or Mantec in case you're wondering.

Testing the ram air effect of a snorkel on a rolling road is quite difficult as you can see by the picture the cooling fan is situated right infront of the grill and doesn't hit the air intake of the snorkel.
I beleive that any 'ram air' generated by a forward facing intake is quickly negated by the solid mass of the air filter anyways.
Also consider the few mm of clearance that is between the trumpets and the inside of the plenum.....it's hardly condusive to generating more power! "

Just as an idea, have you considered upgrading your aerial at all. I replaced my static factory aerial with a Mobile One brand. I bought it with a spring to cope with trees and the like, and the base is very shallow. Reception was improved and still looks original.

The draw back is I had to get a 60mm plate with a 22mm diameter lip machined. This fitted snugly into the original aerial hole, and provided a wider base on the under side of the guard for the top of the aerial mount to screw down onto.

It's a very shallow mount, as there is no aerial tube to drop down from the guard and to be supported on the fire wall.

I have a Safari snorkel on my 99 TD5 130 and the antenna has not been moved. Its not the kind of antenna that goes all the way down, so perhaps that is a simpler solution than drilling more holes? I didn't fit it, so not sure the backgorund.
