Rogue ABS & Traction control lights

Travelling through South America in a 110 Defender we bought new in the middle of last year from the Land Rover dealer in Albany Western Australia. A few weeks ago, the day before we had booked the vehicle in for its 20,000 km service at the Land Rover dealer in Rosario Argentina, we were travelling on a bitumen road at 90 km-hr when both the ABS light and the Traction Control light came on and stayed on.

This remained like that until we stopped the car and engine restarted it and the Traction control light stayed off the ABS light came on and switched off normally after a few metres. The service people in Rosario connected their computer to the vehicle but could find no fault. I asked them to check the proximity sensors on the wheels as I had had a similar problem with my earlier TD5, once again nothing was found.

Since that time the vehicle behave normally for a week, and then the lights started coming on once more, for no apparent reason and not connected with road condition. At the moment the lights are on more often than not.

Has any of you Puma owners experienced this?? any advise would be greatly appreciated

My Sister had a Freelander with the WABCO ABS unit that did this. The dealer swore blind that the ABS would not be working under this situation and told her that she needed to replace the shuttle valve (AU$2000). We proved to them that the ABS was working and that it must be an electrical fault tripping the warning lights. It turned out that the HDC Collar Switch on the gear lever was faulty causing the ABS controller to trip a warning.

I realise that the 110 doesn't have HDC, but I guess my point is that if it's not registering a fault code, it's probably a short circuit somewhere.

    Hi Carlos,

Something similar happened to mine in the first week of ownership.

In my case though the Brake warning light came on as well.

    It was random.

It was caused by a loose earth connection rather than a sensor.

The mechanic didin't have any problem locating and fixing the fault.

Hope yours is similarly just an earth issue.

I had a similar issue with my 2000 Td5. Turned out to be a faulty ABS sensor, although I would guess if this was the issue you would be getting a fault code coming up when you connected it to Nanocom or similar. I dont know how you would diagnose this though without replacing each individual sensor?

Something I noticed however sometimes is that when I had the faulty sensor every now and then the lights would come on and off and I would get a weird vibration through the brake pedal, usually when pulling up to traffic lights or something similar. This was obviously a direct reflection of the sensor being faulty.... Just something to bear in mind.

    Land Rover response

Hi guys, thanks for your input its a hell of a lot better than I have had from LandThank you for your email enquiry. Attached is the response I've had thus far, I've answered this and still await something perhaps a little more constructive.

"Regrettably we at the Land Rover Customer Care Department are not technically trained and do not hold the information you require.
In this instance, we would not be at liberty to source the information you require, as your vehicle would need to be inspected at an authorised Land Rover Dealership to provide a comprehensive diagnosis, before any works could be carried out.
Once again thank you for your enquiry.
    Kind Regards,

I've since found out that a technical bulletin was issued by Land Rover re this problem, it is LTB00078v2/2007, I have a copy but it's in Spanish. They were aware of this problem from the early days. Why mine didn't have the problem fixed seeing its only some nine months old I don't know. But I would put the hard word on your local dealer.

With a D2 you just jack each wheel up in turn and start the car and engage 1st,,
if the speedo moves, that wheel sensor is fine,,
    on a deefer,, who knows?

    Hi Carlos,
Do you have any after market accessories fitted that may connect through the accelerator/brake cabling (eg cruise control). I had an issue with a faulty cruise control unit in my PUMA that caused exactly your problem. One of the cables was shorting out.
