Seen 2 with excessive front diff backlash, 1 was 22,000km and the cross shaft was nearly out of the hemisphere, just caught it in time

I think Pete is on the money, NEVER have I seen such poor QC on diffs in LR's.

    Not the first instance.

We just had a new mechancic start at work, he used to work for the local Landrover dealership

I think it was more of a diff whine issue; but they put 5 diffs in one Puma

Mind you all the rovers involved were all about a quarter of a century old, I wonder if that was something to do with it.

I always have rebuild my own diffs and pay particular attention to the fitting of the thrust washers between the diff carriage and the sun gears.

Another thing, is to hit the diff carriage with a hammer to check it for cracks.

That's it, I'm not giving any more secrets away tonight.

The best secret is to **** them off for something with 4 spider gears and a billet carrier

    Thanks everyone,

Got the phone call from the dealer today, I'm getting a whole new front diff disc to disc. They are then going to pull my old one apart and work out exactly what has failed. Seems bit of a strange order of things but in the end very happy with the result. They are also fixing my rear pinion oil leak while it is in.

Should get the car back in 3 days they say. I will report when I know exactly what has failed. 99% sure it was CW+P but we will see.

Sure they are going to pull the old one out and examine it!!!

They will bin it and deny it ever happened.
just like my mates Landcruiser V8 that seized twice and both times they just put in a new crate motor. They binned the old ones after they said they would very closely examine them and tell him what may have gone wrong.

Our cleaning contractor also has the contract for the big CMI toyota dealership here. He rarely ever sees any real mechanical work done.

Exchange only and he is a old mechanic and I hesitate to guess, he would know.

Same be with your diff and all the other poor sods that have spend their hard earnerd(usually) money on a car that they now can't trust.
I think it stinks and Land Rover should be held accountable some how.

The Defender is quite possibly the simplest of vehicles, certainly the simplest looking and definately the oldest looking and one would have hoped that these pathetic issues have been sorted and not new ones introduced.
I mean really, next thing you guys(defender owners) have to carry spare axles again like in the old days.

That dealer should kiss your arse and paint the body 18ct gold for this.

    just my opinion though
