Puma Recall Notice: P022 Park Brake Oil Contamination

    Puma owners,

Please be aware of the following recall that is being reported by EU owners. If you plug your VIN in the Topix website but choose your country as RSA, this does not show up. Change it to UK/Denmark/etc. however, and the recall pops up. Not sure if the same will happen if you choose Oz as your home country?

It would be interesting to see what the stealers say if we bring this to their attention and demand that they carry this out!

Recall Notice: P022 Park Brake Oil Contamination

Date of Issue: 22nd February 2011

    VIN Range: LD066843 – LD071690 (CKD) LD730411 – LD823248

A concern has been identified with the park brake fitted to 2007-2011 Defender vehicles. Any vehicle repaired under Recall Action P019 prior to the revised repair procedure identified in bulletin P019v4 must be recalled and repaired under this campaign. The shoes of the parking brake could be contaminated with oil which has leaked from the rear of the transfer box. Where oil from the transfer box has impregnated the park brake shoes, the park brake may not hold the vehicle when the park brake lever is applied and the vehicle may instantaneously roll. Transfer box oil contamination of the park brake shoes and brake drum leads to a loss of friction between the brake shoe lining and the brake drum friction surface such that the park brake drum when engaged will not hold the vehicle stationary on a gradient.

    Action to be taken:
Land Rover has taken the decision to recall affected vehicles to remove the output shaft flange, clean the splines, apply Loctite 648 and where necessary the brake shoes will also be replaced

Well, for one only EU owners have received the recall notice, so I'm not sure if LRSA will issue the recall?

True, but consumer-protection laws in RSA are not that great. If LRSA does not want to spend the money on this, they won't

The recall is basically P019 version 2.

It's not active here yet but it will be coming to Australia soon.

Mmm, I've been performing a few lately aswell. Seems the main nut holding the flange to the output shaft isn't very tight during assembly. Oil travels down the splines and sprays out inside the drum and contaminates the shoes. Already seen one where the shaft splines and flange are slightly worn because it was left too long...

I remove the nut and washer, put Wurth 250 sealant under the washer then retighten. Clean or replace shoes and all is good again.

I had this leak fixed in December last year and 2 weeks ago the dealer advised me that they need to perform the same job again as there is an updated seal?
They said that they will call me when the part comes in.......
Another day with the car stuck in the dealers........

    Recall p022 All done

Sent the puma in to get the Aircon fixed again and got them to do the recall on the handbrake at the same time.

They replaced the Felt washer on the back of the gearbox and replaced the propshaft nuts. That was it! 3 day job!!!!

Live in Darwin so no questions to why it took so long or what dealer!

Had mine done about 9 months ago and the problem has come back again. Typical dealer response was they could detect no issue. It was not even tested.
