Where did you get your oil from?

Hi MTB - I had to order it through the main Castrol distributor. It was a special order as the Adelaide branch didn't have any in stock. Am trying to remember if it was $230 or $320... but I think (95% anyway) it was $230. They got it in in 2 or 3 days.

spudboy, was the oil also available in 10W-40? I am assuming you use the lower rating for cloder conditions, living in Perth I feel the higher recomended rating may be better for my conditions.

If you want to keep your warranty, you have no choice. You must use that oil. That is the only spec that LR accept for the PUMA engine.

I am sure it will still run happily on many other types/grades/whatever, but seems to me that it is easy to stay with what's recommended.

I am not sure how they can tell if you use something other than SLX Professional OE

I WISH it was this easy to access the fuel filter on a Td5!

Spudboy,oil sampling will tell the make,type,grade,batch etc etc.You can't hide if they sample the oil in a warranty case. Pat

The oil analysis companies can't tell me what oil I give them unless I tell them first. Even when I send them 10 replicates of the same oil in one go.

Sure, they can measure viscosity, additive package and a whole bunch of other things, however viscosity changes as the oil breaks down, and many oils will have similar viscosity and chemistry.

If you use an oil that is chemically and tribologically similar to the OE spec then I doubt LR could tell without spending tens of thousands on analysis.

However for the sake of peace of mind, it makes sense to use the OE spec oil. An oil of equivalent quality will cost as much. And WA isn't significantly hotter than the east coast on average.
