    Defender as a towing vehicle

Hi all. Have a 93 200TDI 130. Thinking if buying a small van.
I've towed my tinny around with it but how are they towing 1tonne plus?

I dragged 3 tons over Bells Line of Road and out to Capertee on 2 seperate occasions behind my 300Tdi.

Ideal machine for the job - better than out old TD42 Patrol (4.2 N/A 6 pot diesel)

i had a 300 tdi 130 tray back defender and i towed over 4 ton easily i used all ten gears when taking off especially on hills but it towed no worries, on the hiway sat on 100 easy and up hills pretty good too believe it or not up the range outside of kilcoy on the way to landcruiser park in 3rd gear the windy hill just before it turns to dirt all the way it loved it iv towed with a 2003 4.2 turbo diesel patrol asorted landcruisers one with a 6.2 chev diesel 2h disel ,2h turbo, and over all the defender was the best returned way better economy and still did it better no overheating just brilliant

Once you get moving it tows a treat, hardly felt like there was anything on the back. It was about 2 tonne.

seriously some of you guys need to get a reality check...... I tow 1.8t every day with a 110 and have a 2.8tgv in it after the 300tdi died.....yes it does the job, but I woukdnt say easily.....I do suburb/city/hwy driving ever week, so see all the things like stop/starting, braking, merging, over taking etc etc...

I agree. I've towed a loaded car trailer (complete with land rovers) quite a few times with my Td5.

Yes, it tows the weight, but I would never say it does it easily. Once you're at cruising speed, everythings dandy, but you always know it's there when accelerating and braking.

I can't comment for the 200TDI, but for my 2003 TD5 130. It will pull whatever I put behind it. 3 birth horse float with 2 horses and a pony, 16ft car trailer with the S1 on top or my wife's old VS ute (towed from Seymour to Darwin) and a tri-axle box thingo with a house load of stuff.

Once I'm up to a cruising speed than she will sit there.

if you are going to tow with it, I would recommend: good quality EGT gauge pre turbo probe, good quality coolant temp gauge DO NOT RELY ON THE OEM LR GAUGE! A good 3 inch madrel bent exhaust system. I would advise against turning the fuel up. Hi quality oil in your engine and gearbox. Make sure your cooling system is at 100% working condition, if you havent had the rad rodded in the last 80,000km I would suggest it is looked at. If you can fit a bigger intercooler this is also a good idea.

also not only is weight important when towing but shape, ie Cod, which is coefiecency of drag......

Wouldn't bother with a pyro UNLESS your turning the fuel up, I mean they are in such a dull state of tune factory, getting EGT's up would be hard

I'd suggect if your towing alot fit a 4BD1 with turbo and intermacooler

Plus towing with a non fuelled up tdi would be painful, they a painful enough under there own steam!
