Mud console installed to Defender 300 Tdi

Recently I finished off installing my MUD console.

This project was actually finished just a little while before fitting the Provent (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...-defender.html)

What prompted me was there has been no radio in the car for over two years and I like to listen to the radio on the way in to work.

    This is the result

I have the Auxillary battery voltage guage and two accessory power sockets that have power always available on the left, the starting battery voltage guage and two accessory power sockets on right that are on only with ignition.

A turbo boost guage, Defender clock and Oil pressure guage installed in the centre removable panel which provides easy access to all the internals.

Switches for electrical Boss air compressor, motor driven air compressor (300Tdi Motor Driven Air Compressor) is that being a little greedy? and rear wiper rotary switch.

Across the top is an Auber Instruments EGT guage, radio/cd player and another Auber instruments guage monitoring head, gearbox and transfer temp. Flick the rotary switch to test each device.

One problem I have found with this configuration is that the temp given by the sender is off by about 20 degrees. I have used what is considered the "water tank" sensors that are then bolted up to each component. I am in discussion with Auber technical support trying to improve it's accuracy. It seems the heat soak is not transfering readily to the sensor which is in the neck of the sender unit.

If you are going to install a MUD console be warned its a damn lot of work. I reckon I spent a good two and a half days getting all this kit in.

What's left to do is paint or laminate the central removable panel black instead of the silver.

If I had to do it over again I would position the removal panel bolts a little differently so that it would have made it easier to fit more guages in. Having said that though it provides everything I need and still allows for a few more switches or another guage to be installed.

I like the removeable panel idea and wish to hell I;d thought of it before I carved mine up.

Is there anything supporting the stereo DIN cradle asied from the front face of the MUD pod ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Also can you provide some more info on the Auber guage setup - I like it.

These are the ones I gather
Auto gauges, EGT Boost : auberins.com, Temperature control solutions for home and industry

what senders etc did you use and do you have a wiring diagram for how you set it up ?

Also did you get red, green or blue (purely out of interest).

The removable panel has already been opened up a few times which saves having to pull the whole console out so well worth it.

The radio is held by the MUD console at the front and it is screwed down at the the back with a bracket I bent up.

It was the SYL-1813R model. US$48.50 and chose RED only because it was cheaper.

Automobile Multimeter for EGT, Boost, Red [SYL-1813R] - $48.50 : auberins.com, Temperature control solutions for home and industry

    The EGT sensor is

EGT sensor with BSP thread [TC-KEGT-BSP] - $36.00 : auberins.com, Temperature control solutions for home and industry

    The Water tank sensor is

Oil/water tank sensor, wahser RTD type [RTD-AUTO] - $22.00 : auberins.com, Temperature control solutions for home and industry

I have found out it is folded stainless steel and does not conduct thermally as well as it could if it were made of copper. It is also affected by wind/air cooling so the recommendation is to try insulate it.

I like the rotary switch for different sensors... now can you tell me if the rotary switch is rated for thermo couples? if so... where did you get it from... as i'm sure i could use on on my recently installed setup! Only issue is i have a boost ensor and egt sensor.. and i assume the head thermocouples have different offsets etc compared to the egt?

    Thanks

It's just a normal 4 pole rotary switch from Jaycar.

I checked with Auber if it was ok to do it this way and the only negative was that the temp may be out by 1 or 2 degrees due to resistance of the switch.

Borrowing my friends Auber guage I was able to test a single water tank sensor sensor that was connected directly to the guage and there wasn't too much difference at all.

Because the sensor types are different between an EGT and Boost sensor the guage can only setup to handle one type which is why I run two Auber guages plus I don't like the idea of one device for everything.

Yeah i have a gauge for temp.. and a gauge for boost... so as long as the head etc gauges are k type with the same parameters they should be ok.. i may have to look at that... i know you can get k type switches... i should imagine it would be cheaper to buy more gauges tho...

Regarding your temps being out?... is there not an offset you can add to the gauge... i seem to recall one?

    Thanks for the info tho

Sweet, just a suggestion, those phillips head screws could neatly be hidden and carry on the black theme, by using those snap on plastic button, Snap caps the ones where the screw goes to a plastic retainer and the black button snaps on to hide the screws. to remove just flip the cap off.

You are right. Its just that at lower temps it is closer to the correct value being only out by 5-10 degrees but in the upper range it is out between 20-25 degrees.

So when the TM2 is saying 82-83 degrees for normal operating temp (which I have checked with the IR heat gun) the auber is showing 60-61 degrees. As the temp rises above 85 it it only showing about 63-64 degrees.
