The mag. 4wd action no. 157 has an article on common rail diesels, and in particular a 3L GU Patrol that had a complete engine shutdown in the middle of the Simpson Desert.After Nissan inspected the fuel pump, it was found scoring marks in the injector pump caused it to fail, the source put down to poor fuel quality.Nissan declared it was not covered under warranty ,because water and poor fuel quality, and not mechanical failure, was the cause. The vehicle had 40,000 km's, the entire fuel system needed replacing, cost... $10,000. It was recommended owners of all diesel driven vehicles fit an inline diesel water trap and secondary filter , looks like a funnel fuel filter could be a good investment as well. Bob.

We've had ours since February - hubby is happy as a pig in mud!!!

tis the one with the 2.4 Turbo Deisel motor, released in 2007 (I think?)

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but the progression of engine makes [ diesel] for the Defender would be .. 300TDI, TD5, 2.4 TD. Sorry about the questions, but I'm considering the future purchase of a Defender, currently have a TD5 Discovery, and I'm aware of the potential problems of that engine, [ happy with mine atm.] dont know anything about the 300TDI, OR 2.4 TD. I just want to be aware of potential problems before I make a decision .Cheers, Bob

Bob, the puma (code name for ford engine) was introduced in 2007. It's a 2.4 common rail that produces around 90kw of power.
I believe the TD5 BMW donk made around the same power.
The puma has a 6 speed box that marries quite well to the motor. The same motor and box have been used in Ford Transit vans in the UK for some time. I have heard 500 000klm is possible but that is only hear say.

I'd imagine being a common rail it is more allergic to water than previous deisels. However I believe a different line through the deepest of water, and good maintenance there should be little issue.
I have added Fuel Doctor to my diesel from new, and will be fitting a second water trap soon.

If you sniff around the forum a few have hit the 70-80K klm with their pumas now, and have not had engine or gbox issues.
Of course if there is issues outside of warranty then the costs can add up. But this generally relates to any vehicle post 2000.

So if you want to accelerate up a hill, with the air con on, and have a conversation as well as listening to the radio, a PUMA is not so bad.

Had mine since June last year.
Has'nt missed a beat so far
