New radiator - Hi capacity is there such a thing?
Hi Guys
About to receive a new intercooler, so thought i would look at the cooling system while i was at it..
Is there such a thing as a high capacity radiator? i could do with a bit more cooling when towing the boat distance...as i had an incident at new year where it peaked at 110deg... i suspect that it could have been the egr stuck open or something like that as it chewed fuel as well... but i thought extra cooling could never harm when needed...
Its a 2002 (late model one) td5. If you know where to get them... let me know!
Thanks
Steve

I would think as long as your standard radiator is in good condition towing should not be a problem. I regularly tow heavy loads without any overheating.

Yeah i would assume the same as as i said i think the egr was stuck open which would get the temps up more and more over 2-3 hours..
was just wondering tho as if i replace it... why not get something that can handle more...
Thanks

If the Td5 rad has the hole in the baffle like the Tdi patching that so all the coolant makes two trips through it makes quite a difference. Pat

Hi Steve
You can get them... PWR make them ~$850.00
All alloy, no plastic tanks to split
A stock radiator works fine though if clean...
Check your viscous fan.
On a Deefer, earlier ones didnt have a thermo fan to assist the A/C - consider fitting one...
And 110c isnt hot for a hard working vehicle...
But if you havent done it - rack the EGR off and free-flow the exhaust. It'll cool it down some.

Thanks Pat and Mike
I think i'll get it flushed to clear it and see how it goes.. rodded if needs be.. new one if there is no hope...
Exhaust has middle box gone... EGR replacement is coming with the i-cooler.. with boost gauge point included
hopefully that will help..
110c was enough to send it into limp mode briefly.. for like a second.. scared the crap out of me.. as we had been running for 4 hours with about 2.5ton behind and in the deefer..
Viscous fan seems to overwork on warm days.. come off the freeway, pull off from the lights and its screaming round.. so its not limp.. Cant remember seeing a A/c fan mine is the 2002-07 model... but was thinking of maybe a dual kenlow instead of thermo (i know there is lots of debate on this!)
Hopefully just doin the above will help.. and i will know in June as i'm doing the same journey!
Thanks
Steve
ps Mike... did you get my pm of a while ago... i know your busy as all hell...

110c is not over the top for short periods of time, but if it is continuous it would be an indication of problems.
I wouldnt bother getting a radiator "rodded" (cost$$) unless i did it my self.
At continuous higher running temps i would look into a decent oil cooler.
Buy a new radiator and stick it in if your funds allow. ($400 ish)

Nah it wasnt continuous... just a spike... but enough to trigger the ECU so there must be some protection around that point..
After refueling in Mandurah the temps dropped to a continous 98-100.. hence me thinking a stuck EGR etc... and that will be solved soon...
normal is around the low 90's unloaded.. so still a little warm, but not excessive..

When the engine is hot stick a 2'' paint brush into the fan,be a bit aggresive with it and if it's in good nick it shouldn't stop,if it does replace it.They quite often build up rubbish between the rad and I/C at the bottom so look at that also. Pat
