    1993 defender gearbox

Hi there....just put my 1993 defender into the mechanics for a differential seal...while in there he found the gearing to be worn on the gearbox...advised me it would need conditioning....quoted me 4000 bucks to fix(nearly fell of my chair...i told him to fix the gearing and not worryabout the synchros cost half the price....as selceting the gears was not an issue always changed gear easily no probs...does anybody know if this was a dud decision as a mechanic friend pointed out this would be fine..just worried about the reliability in the bush..

If you're happy with the gearbox, then leave it as is. Maybe monitor the oil changes & check if there's any debris.
Bear in mind though that it's nearly 20 years old so (depending on km) it might well be due for some work.

You should be able to get a good second hand gearbox from a specialist for half that.

    you need to ask yourself..

How did he find the worn gears in the gearbox.

$4k should get you an r380 completely overhauled. if hes replacing parts you make sure to ask him for the parts he replaces back, as for not replacing the syncros if hes willing to rebuild the box (replacing the gearings) without putting new syncros in it DONT let him rebuild your box...

Tell him to take a hike and rebuild the LT77 yourself - they are quite easy to do with a few basic tools and a manual to follow along with.

    4k - bloody hell.....
