SupporterI must be feeling really negative today.......
My '06 Td5 defender is about to do it's 100,000 Km. I have no problems with it and looked after it well. I fully expect that it'll do an awful lot more K's, I'll have had a lot of fun and done a lot of work in it before I have to consider this issue for real. But....
I'm wondering what engines can be put in an '06 110? As I reckon the chassis and body will be good WAY past the engine life so what would be the options when this finally happens? Whilst I'm not entirely mechanically ignorant when it comes to swapping engines, matching them to gear boxes and such I am.
I'm just musing over what would be involved, how much money to have in the kitty for that day and who's done what so far. I saw the other day a TDV6 put into a defender by BAS in the UK - that'd be nice (TDV8?!?). Or perhaps something less exotic and more 'bush repairable', who knows.
Guess this may seem pretty negative, like arranging a funeral on your 30th birthday, but when I look at the defender I just dread it getting old and over the hill and would like to know what future I could give it.
I'd like anyones thoughts on this, informed thoughts please, but very technical details would be wasted (on me anyway).
Now I'm of for a drive to tick that 100'00 km and wonder where the next 100,000 k will take us.

Ian, I fully expect the later incarnation (2003 on)of the Td5 to see AT LEAST 500,000km before it needs any major attention. maybe timing chain and guides etc at about 350K and not overheated and oil changed regularly there would be little need to ever remove the head IMO. Make certain the oil pump drive sprocket retaining bolt is checked, and keep the coolant level present and correct also.
They are a very robust engine.

I have a 2002 model with 175ks on it not sure if the head has been off of it but because of their reputation I dont really trust it.
Should I pull the had and do the gasket it doesnt loose coolant or overheat?

SupporterThanks JC, reassuring words especially when all thats usually heard about Td5's is how fragile an engine they are.
If I'm equating 100,000 to 30 years then if it lives to be 150 yrs I reckon it'll just about get me to retirement myself. So something to spend my lump sum on before I sell up and travel about....
mmm....what else would go in there....?

Having had a TD5 Defender, what I found was that it was not the engine that should be your cause for concern but the rest of the driveline.
My TD5 did 125k, no problems whatsoever with the motor, but everything else down the driveline **** itself.
Diffs, unis, clutch, flywheel.....
The TD5 is as far as Im concerned, borderline on what the driveline can handle, and putting in something more powerfull as a powerplant, will cause you more grief than you can imagine.

No need to worry if it hasn't been / isn't overheating, and using no coolant. Yes it most prbably has plastic dowels, but they can last quite OK unless it gets hot.Originally Posted by djam1
