    Defender Steering Box Replacement Q

Does anyone know if I am able to replace my 1999 Defenders steering box with the later 6 bolt type?

I think you are a little confused Toad.

The 6 bolt is the much earlier Gemmer steering box and is regarded to be the weakest one fitted.

The 4 bolt is an Adwest box and regarded to be the strongest / best option.

This is the one still in use.

    Correct, Pete as always

Stick with the Adwest 4 bolt!

Thanks guys, ended up I put a seal kit through my box at a cost of $90 and 5 hours a mucking around. I did find new six bolt boxes new for under $ 300 which raised the question of why overhaul!

No power steering leaks so only the engine ones to go.

    Regards, Toad.
