    What metal do reckon i should use to build it?

    I'd need something that would withstand the heat obviously..

    Where should i go shopping?

    Seen this done to plent of HZ/WB etc. flat tray utes.

    Do consider that the right angle bend will actually be a restriction in your exhaust system.

    The truck style upright pipes/cans are available easy enough from truck part shops. A decent exhaust place should be able to find you one.
